Instructions

1. Begin with curly or texturized hair. You can curl your hair with a curling iron, let it air-dry into soft waves, or use a texturizing product on clean hair. Divide your hair into three sections.

2. Gather each section into a low ponytail and secure each with an elastic. Small clear rubber bands work well here since they won’t add bulk.

3. Braid each ponytail in a simple three-strand braid and secure the ends with elastics. Once braided, gently loosen each braid with your fingers to create a fuller, messier look. If a braid looks flat, you can lightly backcomb sections to add volume.

4. Twist each braid upward and wrap it over the original elastics that held the low ponytails. Pin each twisted braid into place with bobby pins, hiding the elastics and creating a cohesive updo.

5. Repeat with all three braids. Tuck and pin any loose areas, adjusting the shape until it feels balanced. Finish with a strong-hold hairspray if you want extra staying power, and you’re ready to go.

Side note: while assembling the photos for this tutorial I noticed I looked a bit exposed in some process shots. As much as I like to think I’m laid-back, I’ll remember to choose a different top next time I plan a behind-the-scenes shoot—lesson learned and a little laugh to go with it.
