Curly hair updos can be tricky. This one is both simple and adorable.

I’ve previously shared tutorials ranging from double buns to reverse crown braids, but most of those featured models with relatively straight hair. This rope twist updo is designed for readers with curly hair—so if you’ve been looking for an easy, flattering style that embraces natural texture, this one’s for you. It works beautifully for casual days and dressy events alike, and it only takes a few minutes to create. Follow the step-by-step instructions below to try it yourself.
Curly Hair Updo: Rope Twist Updo
Materials
- Bobby pins
- Elastic hair ties
Instructions
Step 1: Divide your hair into three sections—left, center, and right. Secure the middle section at the nape with an elastic. Twist the secured section into a small low bun and pin it in place with bobby pins.

Step 2: Take one of the remaining loose side sections. Split it into two smaller pieces and twist each piece individually. Once both pieces are twisted, twist them together in a rope-twist motion. Wrap that twisted section around the bun and secure it with bobby pins.
Step 3: Repeat the same rope-twist process on the opposite side: split the side section into two, twist each strand separately, twist them together, then wrap and pin around the bun. Adjust any pieces for balance and dimension, and finish with hairspray if you’d like added hold.

That’s all there is to it—quick, textured, and elegant. Our model Stephanie appreciated how this style adds detail and dimension without complicated steps, making it a perfect go-to when you want polished results in minimal time.
Can you try this style on non-curly hair?
Yes. This rope twist updo works on most hair types. If your hair is very smooth or fine, apply a texturizing spray or a little dry shampoo first to create grip for the twists and to help the bun hold better.
