5-Minute Woven Wall Hanging: Quick DIY Home Decor Tutorial

5 Minute DIY // Turn a 2x3 Rug into a Hanging Weaving

I love a clever decor hack—especially one that takes five minutes or less. Today I’m sharing a simple wall art weaving idea you can finish almost instantly.

I currently have this piece hanging at home. Recognize it from my recent guest bedroom makeover? It also makes a thoughtful handmade gift for creative friends—perfect for holidays, birthdays, or a housewarming.

All you need is a small 2×3 rug and a few basic supplies. Ready to make your own? Here’s how.

A 5 Minute Home Decor Hack (Tutorial)

Woven Wall Hanging Materials

  • 2×3 woven rug (available in many styles and colors)
  • stitch witchery, or needle and thread if your rug is thick
  • yarn or twine
  • decorative brass piece (optional) or another ornament you prefer
  • dowel rod
  • iron (only needed when using stitch witchery)

How to Make a Woven Wall Hanging

1. Cut the dowel rod to the desired length. It should extend a couple of inches beyond the rug’s width on each side. If you prefer, have a hardware store cut it for you—many will do so if the rod is longer than 12 inches.

2. Lay the rug face down and place the dowel where you want the top fold to be. Slide a strip of stitch witchery under the dowel to hold the fold in place.

3. Heat your iron and fold the rug’s top edge over the dowel. Follow the stitch witchery instructions—apply the iron until the adhesive bonds the layers. If your rug is especially thick, sew the fold in place with needle and thread instead.

4. Tie a length of yarn to each end of the dowel and secure with a double or triple knot. Trim the excess yarn. At this point the piece is ready to hang. If you want to add a decorative brass element like mine, continue to the next step.

5. Thread a short piece of yarn through a hole in the brass ornament and through an opening in the woven rug, then knot it securely. That’s it—super quick and easy!

If you can’t find a brass hanging element like mine, you can make one yourself.

Use thin brass or copper sheets and handheld metal cutters to cut shapes, then punch a small hole in each piece to string them together or attach them directly to your weaving. This produces a custom, handmade accent that complements the textile.
