How to Turn Anything into a DIY Ice Chest
One of my favorite hacks is turning ordinary containers into instant ice chests. A woven basket makes a great cooler when lined with something waterproof. Use a plastic trash bag, a reusable waterproof bag, a silicone liner, or any waterproof insert that fits inside your chosen container. Fill the liner with ice, add cans, bottles, or chilled snacks, and you have an attractive, functional cooler that blends with your décor.
The best part is cleanup: when the party’s over, lift out the liner, drain or dump the melted ice, and your basket or container is ready to return to normal use. This trick works with crates, metal tubs, decorative planters, and more—whatever fits the vibe of your gathering.
A Quick and Easy Fire
A fire pit creates instant ambiance for any summer evening. For a fast, clean-starting flame that’s easy to manage, consider using individually wrapped fire-starting logs. These are convenient to light and size to the fire you want, and they’re safe for roasting campfire foods like marshmallows and hot dogs.
Having a dependable, easy-to-start fire means you spend more time socializing and less time fussing with kindling and smoke. It’s a small change that makes backyard nights simpler and more enjoyable—especially when s’mores are on the menu.
Fabric-Covered DIY Skewers
Give plain wooden skewers a colorful upgrade using fabric scraps and a little decoupage medium. Cut a strip of fabric the same length as the skewer handle and slightly wider than needed to wrap around. Brush Mod Podge or another decoupage glue onto the handle, press the fabric in place, and roll the skewer so the fabric wraps smoothly. Add glue to the overlapping edge, press down, and let dry.

For a single serving, combine 4–5 oz of pink lemonade (store-bought or homemade) with 2 oz of vodka or light rum. Shake or stir, pour over ice, and top with a splash of grenadine to create a pretty ombre effect. Finish with a squeeze of fresh lime juice and a lime wheel for garnish.
Make a pitcher of this recipe for larger groups: multiply the ingredients and chill ahead of time so it’s ready when guests arrive. Serve in clear glasses to show off the color and add fresh fruit or herbs—like raspberries or mint—for extra visual appeal and flavor.
