I can’t go a week lately without talking about planters—whether to buy or DIY. I couldn’t resist one more spring planter project, especially because this one is just as simple as the popular hanging planter hack many of you loved. Even better: it gives something old a fresh, modern look.
I partnered with Rust‑Oleum to revive some rusty metal planters using Rust‑Oleum Stops Rust Protective Enamel spray paint. These planters needed a quick reboot, and this product not only updates the finish but also provides a durable, corrosion‑resistant coating that helps prevent future rust. I’ll walk through the quick process and show the before and after.

I loved the shape of these metal planters, but the original finish didn’t suit my style. I prefer a cleaner, more minimal look that lets the plants be the focal point, so spray paint was the easiest way to achieve that. The whole makeover took less than an hour and required only basic prep and a couple of light coats of protective enamel.
Start by cleaning the planters to remove dirt, debris, and any flaky rust. A stiff brush and a damp cloth usually do the trick; make sure surfaces are dry before painting. I applied a light, even coat of Rust‑Oleum Stops Rust Protective Enamel, which bonds to metal and creates a tough, rust‑inhibiting finish. Because it’s designed specifically for metal, it’s a reliable choice for restoring outdoor or indoor metal pieces.
The color I chose is Gloss Deep Slate, which gives a slightly reflective, polished look—the photos show how the light plays off the finish. If you prefer something more muted or colorful, the product line offers a range of colors and finishes. I’m already thinking about trying Flat Red Rock or Rich Jade on another project.
