Surprising DIY Gift Pouches From Recycled Paper: Holiday Wrap Idea

This year I’m getting an early start on holiday DIY projects because there are so many ideas I want to make and only a limited number of days before Christmas. Are you ready to craft with me?

I created these paper present pouches as a gift-wrapping idea perfect for packaging small items and stocking stuffers. The best part: they’re made from things you probably already have stashed in a closet — used gift bags. You can also use leftover wrapping paper, wallpaper scraps, newspaper, or any decorative paper you like.

These pouches aren’t just for December — they also make charming packaging for Thanksgiving hostess gifts, birthdays, anniversaries, and more. Follow along to make your own.

Materials

  • Used gift bags (mine were from Target)
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Pen or pencil for tracing
  • Tissue paper
  • Small gift to place inside the pouch

How to Make Paper Present Pouches from Old Gift Bags

Begin by cutting the flat panels from your gift bags and removing any handles. For round pouches, trace a bowl or lid for a smooth circle. For other shapes, use a ruler to trace rectangles, squares, or geometric forms.

When cutting, stack the two layers of the bag and cut both at once so the front and back pieces match exactly. Next, place the two cut pieces together and stitch around the edge about 1/4 inch from the rim. Leave a gap large enough to insert your present.

You can insert the gift while the pouch is still under the sewing machine. Pause at a convenient spot, lower the needle to lock it in place, and gently push the gift into the opening. Then continue stitching to close the pouch completely and secure the end with a reverse stitch.

If you don’t have used gift bags on hand, a sheet of recycled wrapping paper or even a new roll will work just as well. Wallpaper samples or newspaper can also give a unique look — there are lots of possibilities depending on the look you want.

These pouches would also be ideal for an advent calendar — use a different pouch for each day and fill them with small surprises. I’ve been meaning to make an advent calendar for years; these little pouches would be a perfect way to present the daily treats. Would you try that?

If you prefer a softer feel, you can adapt the same idea with fabric or felt. Last year I made a similar project using felt: sewn felt pouches make sweet, reusable gift packaging.
