With the holidays approaching quickly, I’ve been planning festive hair and nail projects for parties and gatherings. One pretty simple idea that makes a big impact is this color-blocked polka dot nail art. It’s a quick DIY you can do at home and it looks delicate and festive—almost like a collection of tiny ornaments on your fingertips.
If you want an at-home manicure that’s both playful and polished, this tutorial is a great place to start. Read on for step-by-step instructions that are easy to follow and adaptable to any color palette.

What you’ll need
- Base coat and top coat
- Three nail polish colors (a neutral base and two contrasting tones for the dots)
- A dotting tool (or a bobby pin/toothpick as an alternative)
- Thin striping tape or small pieces of regular tape
- Nail polish remover and cotton swabs for cleanup
Step-by-step instructions
- Start with clean, prepped nails. Apply a base coat to protect the nail surface and help the polish adhere better.
- Paint all nails one solid color as the base. A soft nude or cream works well because it lets the colored dots stand out, but you can choose any neutral or subtle shade you prefer. Allow the base to dry completely before moving on.
- Using a dotting tool (or an alternative like a bobby pin), create polka dots across each nail using one of your chosen contrast colors. Vary the dot sizes for visual interest. Let these dots dry thoroughly.
- Once the dots are dry, apply small pieces of tape so they bisect several dots at the halfway point. The goal is to cover half of each selected dot so you can add a contrasting color to the exposed half.
- Use the third polish color and the dotting tool to go over the exposed halves of the taped dots, aligning the new color with the uncovered portion of each circle. Carefully remove the tape while the polish is still wet enough to lift cleanly but not so wet that it smudges.
- Allow the layered dots to dry fully, then finish with a clear top coat to seal the design and add shine. Clean up any stray polish around the cuticles with a cotton swab dipped in remover.
The effect is charming and modern—the color-blocked dots give each nail a mini, two-tone motif that’s subtle from a distance and detailed up close. This look is highly customizable: try jewel tones for a holiday-ready manicure, pastels for spring, or bold neons for a summer party.
