Leather-Wrapped Holiday Gift Wrap: DIY in 5 Minutes

Leather wrapped DIY gift wrap for the holidays

Recently I discovered a stash of leftover leather straps in my craft closet from past projects, so I decided to repurpose them into a simple, stylish holiday gift-wrap idea. These stamped leather nameplate tags are quick to make, look polished on any present, and work especially well for masculine or unisex gifts.

Materials

  • Leather straps — cut to length so they wrap around the gift and meet in the back without overlapping.
  • Metal letter stamp set for stamping names or short messages.
  • Stamping hammer (a regular hammer will work in a pinch, but a stamping hammer gives better control).
  • 4×4-inch steel block (optional, provides a stable surface for stamping).
  • Hot glue gun for attaching the leather to the wrapped gift.

Instructions

  1. Wrap your gift with your chosen paper as you normally would.
  2. Cut a leather strap to the proper length so it sits snugly around the present and the ends meet cleanly at the back.
  3. Organize your metal letter stamps in the order you’ll use them. Place the first stamp straight and firm on the leather, then strike the top of the stamp handle with the hammer to create a clear impression. Repeat for each letter until your nameplate or message is complete. Using a solid steel block underneath helps produce crisp, even impressions.
  4. Apply a thin bead of hot glue along the backside of the leather strap and press it onto the wrapped gift where you want it to sit. Hold briefly to allow the glue to set. The hot glue adheres well but peels off easily when it’s time to open the present, so it won’t damage the wrapping or the gift.

Variations and ideas

To make Christmas cracker–style gifts, use a mailing tube instead of a box. Wrap the tube with paper leaving 4 to 5 inches of excess paper on both ends, then twist and tie the ends with string. Add a stamped leather nameplate with a dab of hot glue for a refined finishing touch. These leather tags also work beautifully on small boxes, wine bottles, or any gift where you want a minimalist, modern look.
