Blood Orange and Grapefruit Mimosas Recipe for Brunch

Blood oranges are only in season for a short time, so before they disappear from markets I wanted to share an easy cocktail that keeps the Memorial Day weekend spirit alive: blood orange grapefruit mimosas with a little extra kick.

The bright tartness of grapefruit combined with the sweet, complex flavor of blood orange makes this drink a standout for warm-weather gatherings. It’s simple to make, refreshingly balanced, and perfect for brunch or a sunny celebration.

Blood Orange Grapefruit Mimosas Recipe

Ingredients (makes one drink)

  • 3 oz grapefruit juice (fresh-squeezed or bottled)
  • 1 oz fresh-squeezed blood orange juice
  • 3 oz champagne or other sparkling wine
  • 1 oz vodka
  • 1 oz simple syrup (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 sprig fresh thyme

Combine the grapefruit juice, blood orange juice, vodka, thyme, and simple syrup in a mixing glass. Stir gently to blend and release the thyme aroma. Pour the mixture into a chilled flute or glass, then top with chilled champagne. Garnish with the thyme sprig or a thin blood orange slice if desired.

Quick note on simple syrup: making your own is fast and reliable. Bring equal parts water and sugar (1:1) to a simmer in a small saucepan, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Remove from the heat, let cool, then store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
