Field Trip: Inspiration from a Quirky Emu Farm in Atlanta

When I was a child, the best days at school were always field trip days. They felt like little adventures — roller coasters, petting zoos, and the annual mud walk (my favorite). As I grew older, those outings gradually lost some of their magic, until eventually there were no more school-day trips left to anticipate. One of the small disappointments of getting older.

A few weeks ago, though, I discovered a wonderfully odd place that I thought would make a perfect location for a shoot. These days, photo shoots feel like an adult version of field trips, and I get just as excited about them as I did back then.

Amelia and I packed up our gear, brought along an ombré hanging ice chest, and spent the day at an urban emu farm. It was random, yes — but also a little bit magical.

We stayed most of the day. By the time we left we were exhausted and sweaty, but we vowed to return when the weather cools. In the meantime, we have plenty of photos to share from our day at the farm: swans gliding across the water, a large koi pond with a hidden bridge, a lush greenhouse, and, of course, a few curious emus.

If you’re in Atlanta and want to visit, this place is worth checking out. It’s listed on Airbnb, so you can even book a stay if you’re coming from out of town and want to experience the farm overnight.

Did you enjoy field trips as a child? Which trip stands out as your favorite? And as an adult, what kinds of field-trip-like adventures are you seeking out now? I’d love to hear your stories.
