As part of a year-long travel project, we flew from Atlanta to Richmond, VA for a long weekend. Richmond surprised me with its charm, vibrant neighborhoods, and thoughtfully restored historic buildings. We packed a lot into a short visit—eating at local restaurants, browsing independent shops, visiting galleries and museums, and enjoying green spaces. Below is an organized guide to the best places we discovered and recommend.
Places to visit near Richmond VA
We arrived early on a Friday and headed straight to our hotel to drop off bags and change. From there the weekend was a steady stream of exploring. Richmond has many revitalized historic buildings, lively neighborhoods, and plenty of things to do—this guide focuses on the highlights for dining, drinking, shopping, galleries, and a few outdoor spots you won’t want to miss.
Where to Stay in Richmond
Quirk Hotel
Quirk Hotel is one of the most memorable places we’ve stayed. The design-forward interiors have a playful, cinematic feel—think bold color palettes, artful details, and a distinctly stylish vibe. Amenities include a popular rooftop bar, a well-regarded restaurant downstairs, and a direct connection to Quirk Gallery and shop. It’s an excellent base if you enjoy art, design, and a boutique hotel atmosphere.
HI Richmond Hostel
If you prefer budget-friendly lodging, HI Richmond is a good hostel option. We didn’t stay there, but it’s a sensible choice for travelers seeking affordable accommodations and easy access to the city.
Where to Eat and Drink in Richmond
Brenner Pass
Brenner Pass comes highly recommended by locals. Reservations can be hard to secure, so book ahead if you want to dine here.
Metzger
Metzger serves German-influenced dishes and cocktails—comforting, flavorful, and well suited to groups.
Graffiato
Graffiato offers Italian-inspired fare with hand-rolled pastas, artisanal pizzas, and small plates. The hand-cut spaghetti and the American pie-style pizza were standouts for us.
Maple & Pine
Located downstairs at Quirk Hotel, Maple & Pine is a convenient and tasty option. The menu is creative and the cocktail list is strong, making it a great place to start or end an evening.
Charm School Social Club
This ice cream and coffee shop was so good we went twice. It’s charming and the peanut butter fudge ice cream is a favorite.
Whisk
Whisk is a cozy spot for sandwiches, pastries, and coffee. They also make macaron ice cream sandwiches, which are fun and delicious.
Stella’s
Stella’s is the go-to spot for Greek food—fresh, flavorful, and hearty.
Eleven Months
Eleven Months in Carytown is a rotating restaurant concept where everything changes when a new pop-up moves in: decor, menu, and cocktails. It’s a fun place to try something different.
Coffee Shops in Richmond
Lamplighter
Lamplighter has several locations and is a reliable choice for coffee and tea. Try the Boston cream donut if you see it—the pastry was excellent.
Sugar & Twine
Sugar & Twine in Carytown offers coffee and freshly baked goods. Don’t miss their homemade Oreos if they’re available.
Alchemy Coffee
Alchemy Coffee serves well-crafted drinks and baked goods. The potato hand pie is a savory treat worth trying.
Where to Shop in Richmond
Need Supply (archive)
Note: Need Supply has closed, but it was a long-standing Richmond retailer and worth mentioning as part of the city’s shopping history. When it was open, it carried a curated selection of clothing and accessories and was a popular destination for visitors.
NA NIN
NA NIN is a well-curated boutique featuring brands such as Samantha Pleet, Ace & Jig, and Nu Swim. The shop has a strong aesthetic and a great selection of clothing and accessories. It’s located across from a Lamplighter location in Carytown.
Verdalina
Verdalina is close to Quirk and offers thoughtfully selected women’s clothing and accessories. The shop is known for its friendly owner and for carrying designer labels in a welcoming environment.
Mod & Soul
Mod & Soul is a more affordable option near Verdalina with a range of trendy, budget-friendly clothing. I found a striped dress here at a great price.
Quirk Gallery
Attached to Quirk Hotel, Quirk Gallery doubles as a small shop and event space. They often host weekend workshops and sell unique housewares, jewelry, and art-focused items.
Other Things to Do in Richmond
Maymont Gardens
Maymont is a lovely and free public estate with Italian and Japanese-style gardens, a variety of plantings, and a small animal area. It’s a peaceful spot for a stroll and offers photogenic landscaping and paths.
Bike Riding
Exploring Richmond by bike is a fun way to see neighborhoods and streets between destinations. Bike rentals are available in several places—Quirk Hotel even offers complimentary bike rentals to guests, which makes it easy to explore on two wheels.
Virginia Museum of Fine Arts
The VMFA is worth a visit for its varied collections, especially mid–late 20th century works. The museum’s galleries are spacious and well curated, making it an enjoyable cultural stop.
Local Art Galleries
The neighborhood around Quirk Hotel hosts several smaller galleries. If you enjoy contemporary art, plan extra time to visit a few of these independently run spaces.
