DIY Valentine’s Plant Gifts: Budget-Friendly Ideas in 5 Minutes

Budget-Friendly DIY Valentines (That Don't Suck) in 5 Minutes

Valentine’s Day may not be tomorrow, but it’s coming up in less than a month. If you’re looking for simple, affordable DIY gift ideas, I’ve got plenty to share — starting now so you won’t be scrambling at the last minute. To kick things off, here’s a super-easy, low-cost project: DIY paper bag plant gifts. They’re quick, cute, and may cost you nothing if you already have the supplies on hand.

These gifts take just a few minutes to make and can be customized with playful messages and simple designs. They’re perfect for coworkers, teachers, neighbors, or anyone who appreciates a small, thoughtful plant.

Budget-Friendly DIY Valentines Using Spray Painted Paper Bags

Materials:

  • Paper lunch bags
  • Spray paint (or craft paint)
  • Paint pen or permanent marker
  • Small to medium potted plants (succulents work well)

Instructions:

1) Spray paint the outside of the paper bags in a well-ventilated outdoor area. To help the bags stand upright while you paint, place a few small rocks or pebbles in the bottom of each one. Allow the paint to dry, then apply a second coat if needed.

Tip: For a gradient effect, start spraying near the top of the bag and move downward, stopping short of the very bottom.

2) Once the paint is fully dry, flatten the bags again so they’re easy to write on. Use a paint pen or marker to add a message toward the bottom of the bag (you’ll be rolling the top down, so place text low enough to remain visible).

Message ideas that work well: “Life would succ without you” (perfect with succulents) or “Plant one on me.” If you come up with other clever plant-related puns, they’re welcome — get creative.

3) After the ink dries, roll the top of the bag down several times to create a neat cuff. The first roll might tear the bag a little, but subsequent rolls will cover any imperfections.

4) Place the potted plant inside the bag. These are intended to be given with the plant in its original nursery pot, so no repotting is required before gifting.

For extra Valentine’s flair, add paper hearts to the pot by attaching them to a wooden skewer or a short piece of floral wire and sticking them into the soil. Simple embellishments like this make the presentation feel extra special without adding much time or cost.

Besides messages, try a few pattern ideas. A windowpane grid is one of my favorites: use a ruler and paint pen to draw straight lines for a clean, modern look. These bags also double as cute lunch bags if you want to tuck a treat inside for kids (or discreetly smuggle candy, if that’s your plan).
