Make an Etched-Style Mirror in Minutes
You can get the look of an etched mirror in minutes without using heavy, expensive, or potentially hazardous etching creams.
I used a frosted glass spray paint to recreate the etched effect. It gives the same frosted appearance, is faster to apply, and is more budget-friendly.

Materials Needed for a Frosted Glass Mirror
- Round mirror (framed or unframed)
- Paper doily or stencil of your choice
- Frosted glass spray paint
- Double-sided tape

Step-by-Step: How to Make a Frosted Glass Mirror
1. Clean the mirror thoroughly with soap and water to remove dust, fingerprints, or residues. Allow it to dry completely.
2. Choose a paper doily or stencil that fits the size of your mirror. For reference, the doily used here covered about one third of the mirror.
Apply double-sided tape to the back of the doily to block spray from getting under areas you want to remain clear. Be generous with the tape around the patterned edges, but avoid covering any parts of the design that should remain open.
Turn the doily over and press it firmly onto the mirror where you want the clear reflective area to remain. Keep in mind: the portion covered by the doily will be the visible reflective area after spraying; the exposed areas will become frosted.
3. Lay the mirror flat on a protected surface. Shake the frosted glass spray according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Spray from 7–12 inches away using even, sweeping strokes.
Apply thin, light layers to prevent drips and to achieve a smooth finish. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next; drying time will vary by product, but expect roughly 10–15 minutes between coats. The sample mirror required about four coats for full coverage.
4. Once the final layer is fully dry, carefully peel off the paper doily and remove any remaining tape.
Wipe the mirror gently with a damp cloth to remove any dust or particles, and then hang or display your new frosted mirror.

Now that you know how to make a frosted glass doily mirror, consider other stencil shapes, doilies, or cut-paper patterns to customize the look. This approach works for many styles—from delicate vintage motifs to bold geometric shapes.
