Asymmetric Scallop Nail Art Tutorial: Step-by-Step Guide

When we brainstorm new nail art tutorials, Rachel and I focus on designs that are simple to recreate at home but still make a striking statement beyond a plain manicure. This asymmetric scallop idea fits the bill: it’s easy to do yourself and delivers a distinctive, repeatable look.

Follow the step-by-step instructions below to create asymmetric scallop nails you can customize with your favorite colors.

Materials

– Two nail polish colors of your choice
– Clear base coat
– Clear top coat

Instructions

1. Apply a clear base coat to protect your nails and help the color last longer.

2. Paint each nail with your selected base color. Allow the polish to dry completely before applying a second coat if needed to achieve even coverage.

3. Once the base color is fully dry, use the second polish to create the scallop pattern. With quick, upward strokes, start from one side of the nail and work toward the opposite side. Make each scallop slightly shorter than the previous one so the curve slopes across the nail—this creates the asymmetric effect.

You only need two to three scallops per nail to keep the design clean and modern.

4. Repeat the scallop strokes on each nail. Allow the polish to dry for a few minutes, then finish with a clear top coat to seal the design and add shine.

This look is very forgiving and doesn’t require special tools. If you prefer more control, use a small nail art brush or dotting tool to shape the scallops precisely, but a steady hand and the polish brush will work fine for a casual, handmade feel.
