Sometimes when we’re feeling restless, Jeff and I will plan a same-day getaway. This Charleston trip was one of those spontaneous escapes.
On the morning we left, we still hadn’t decided where to go for our first official 12 trips in 12 months project. We narrowed our options to three drivable destinations, resolved it with a quick rock-paper-scissors match, packed our bags, and hit the road—Charleston, here we come.
The Cool Girls Travel Guide to Charleston
Charleston was an excellent choice and I’m already looking forward to returning. If the city had a few more stylish boutiques, we might seriously consider moving here. For now, Atlanta is home, but Charleston left a strong impression.
The city shines with outstanding food, cozy coffee shops, and warm, friendly people. There are some standout shops too—Indigo & Cotton and Mac & Murphy made the list—so bring room in your schedule for a bit of shopping between bites and coffee stops.
Full disclosure: on the drive up I glanced at other Charleston guides to build a must-see list. When we arrived, several recommended spots had closed or were relocating, so we ended up wandering, sampling, and discovering many local favorites on our own. Below are the places that stood out.
Best Charleston Food Spots
The Darling Oyster Bar
Attracted by the branding and stayed for the oysters and cocktails. A must-visit for seafood lovers.
The Park Cafe
We had an incredible breakfast here—order the fried egg sandwich. It’s worth it.
Butcher & Bee
Great food and a relaxed vibe. Depending on where you’re staying you might drive over, but it’s well worth the trip.
The Macintosh
Recommended by our hotel for its farm-to-table approach from a James Beard semifinalist. Fresh, thoughtful dishes and excellent flavors.
Husk
This place appears on nearly every Charleston list for a reason. Their burger is a local favorite—if the restaurant is out, check the adjacent bar for availability.
Henrietta’s at The Dewberry
If you want an elevated dining experience with a stylish atmosphere, Henrietta’s is a great pick.
Sugar Bakeshop
A charming bake shop on Cannon Street. Grab a sweet treat before visiting nearby shops like Indigo & Cotton and Mac & Murphy.
Coolest Coffee Shops in Charleston
Black Tap
A relaxed neighborhood coffee spot with great pastries. If they have the Nutella banana turnovers, get one—they’re outstanding. This was my favorite coffee stop in the city.
Revelator
We visited more than once. Familiar from Atlanta, it’s reliable, well-made coffee with friendly staff.
The Daily
A solid coffee shop with a pleasant atmosphere—very good, though slightly behind the other two for me.
Best Charleston Shops
Worthwhile
A beautifully curated shop on King Street featuring homewares and distinctive designer pieces. Worth dropping in as you explore the main shopping area.
Indigo & Cotton
A thoughtfully edited men’s shop on Cannon Street with appealing gifts and accessories. Although focused on menswear, there are neat finds for everyone.
Mac & Murphy
A tiny, delightful paper-goods shop on Cannon Street directly across from Indigo & Cotton—easy to visit both in one stop.
Beckett
Located on King Street, Beckett features a mix of clothing, beauty products, and accessories. While not entirely my aesthetic, there were several pieces worth considering, including items from well-known brands and niche beauty lines.
The Commons
We missed this shop while it was relocating, but it has a strong reputation. It’s reopening soon in collaboration with Workstead, so add it to your list for future visits.
Cutest Charleston Hotels
The Dewberry
We stayed at The Dewberry on a recommendation and loved it. Housed in a former federal building, the hotel has been restored to mid-century style with carefully chosen furniture and decor. Its location—just off King Street—makes it ideal for walking to many restaurants and shops.
Other Great Charleston Hotels
We considered a few other hotels before choosing The Dewberry:
- The Spectator Hotel
- Zero George
- The Mills House — this one sometimes shows good last-minute prices, so it’s worth checking if you’re booking late.
Other Things of Note
Rainbow Row
These colorful historic houses are some of Charleston’s most photographed spots. It’s a short stretch but picturesque, and you can walk a block to the waterfront for views of the Ravenel Bridge.
Folly Beach
A short 20-minute drive from downtown Charleston, Folly Beach offers a quick beach break if you want a change of scenery and some ocean air.
