Tropical Storm Faye moved through Florida late last week, which gave me a few unexpected days off and not much to do. With steady rain keeping me indoors, I decided to use supplies I already had at home to make a small project that would pass the time and be useful.
I found a piece of cardboard and a roll of woodgrain contact paper and set out to create a simple bulletin board to showcase some of my family photographs until I can get them framed. The project was quick, inexpensive, and turned out better than I expected.
From start to finish it took roughly 30 minutes. I estimate the materials could cost about $9 if bought new, though I used items I already had and spent nothing. Below are clear steps and tips so you can make your own DIY photo board.
Materials
- Cardboard (any size) — $0.00 if repurposed
- Faux-wood (faux bois) contact paper — about 2 feet depending on board size; roughly $2.00
- Simple white picture frame — around $7.00 (thrifted frames are cheaper)
- Scissors
- X-Acto knife (optional, for precise trimming)
How to Make a DIY Photo Board
1. Cut the cardboard and attach contact paper
Trim the cardboard to the size you want for your display. Peel back one corner of the contact paper backing and align that corner with a matching corner of the cardboard. Press the exposed corner of the contact paper onto the cardboard, then gradually pull the backing away while smoothing the contact paper across the surface. Work slowly to prevent bubbles and creases. Using a flat tool or your hand to smooth as you go makes the process easier and produces a clean finish.
2. Add layers of contact paper for interest (optional)
After applying the first sheet, I wanted a bit more visual interest. I cut several narrow strips from leftover contact paper in different widths and applied them in the opposite direction. The contrasting grain directions blended nicely and gave the board a custom, handmade appearance. This step is optional but effective for a more finished look.
3. Trim the edges and frame it
Trim any excess contact paper from the cardboard edges with scissors or an X-Acto knife for precision. Place the finished board into your picture frame and secure it. If the frame has backing clips, fold them back into place; if not, use small pieces of tape to hold the board in the frame. Hang the frame or prop it up to display photos, notes, or keepsakes.
Tips and variations:
- Choose cardboard with enough stiffness to stand in a frame without warping. Double up layers if needed.
- If your contact paper has strong pattern repeat, plan how the grain lines will meet to avoid awkward seams.
- Mix different widths and directions of contact paper strips to create a faux inlay or plank effect.
- Use small washi or poster-tape tabs to attach photos so they can be rearranged easily without damage.
This quick DIY photo board is an easy and affordable way to display photos and artwork using common household items. It’s customizable, portable, and a great way to repurpose materials you already have on hand.
