Easter Treat Bags for Kids: Fun Ideas and Fillers

I assembled these Easter goody bags for a celebration and had my son paint all the wooden gift tags.

Handmade touches make goody bags and party favors feel special, so a few weeks before Easter I turned an after-school craft activity into a way to personalize favors. My son, Hayes, painted egg-shaped wooden tags for each bag. We paint and craft often, so the wooden eggs were just another fun surface to decorate—simple, approachable, and kid-friendly.

The finished tags looked adorable and added a warm, personal element to the bags, so I wanted to share how I put everything together and where I found the supplies in case you want to try a similar project.

These treat bags are easy to adapt for any occasion. With different shapes, colors, or themed embellishments, the same idea works beautifully for birthday party favors, Christmas gift bags, Valentine’s treats, or Halloween goodie sacks. Wooden tags come in many shapes for holidays and special events, so you can customize them to match your celebration.

Below are the items I used and where I found them, to make it simple if you want to recreate this look.

Easter Goody Bags

  1. I found speckled-dyed drawstring bags while visiting Palm Springs. They were from a vendor called Mojave Flea and the brand is All Roads. I couldn’t locate the exact bags online, but they’re dyed in a similar way to silk bandanas, which gives them a subtle, organic speckle pattern I love.
  2. The felt carrots were taken from a felt Easter garland that I disassembled. The soft, stitched carrots make a playful, textured accent to pair with the painted wooden tags.
  3. I bought plain wooden egg blanks at a local craft store. If you prefer ready-to-use pieces, look for versions that come pre-drilled for hanging—I had to drill small holes into my blanks to turn them into tags. Pre-drilled blanks save time and make assembly easier.
  4. Finally, I used leftover yarn from a previous project to tie the felt carrots and wooden egg tags to the bags and to reinforce the bag drawstrings. Simple yarn or twine works perfectly for this rustic, handmade aesthetic.

Tips for assembling your own: keep the painting session relaxed—let kids experiment with color and pattern; use child-safe paints and a simple sealant if you want the tags to be more durable; and mix textures like felt and yarn for visual interest. Pre-planning how many tags and decorations you need will make the assembly line faster on the day you fill the bags.

These little handmade additions make goody bags feel thoughtful and unique without requiring complicated steps. Wishing you a joyful, creative celebration—happy Easter!
