How to Choose Wall Art That Fits Your Home Perfectly

I’m a big art lover — it makes sense given my studio art degree — but I know choosing and hanging artwork can feel intimidating. Picking pieces, deciding where they’ll work in a room, and getting a gallery wall hung straight are common stress points.

To show how simple the process can be, I partnered with Art.com and used their iOS app to plan, preview and buy artwork for my space. The app streamlines everything from choosing a gallery style to confirming that the framed piece will actually fit on your wall. Below you’ll find before-and-after photos from my room so you can see the difference.

Here’s a side-by-side of the space before and after:

I started with the Gallery Wall Designer in the Art.com app. It offers preset layouts — mid-century modern (my favorite), rustic, contemporary, and more — so you can quickly try different gallery arrangements. I experimented with multiple layouts until I found the two-frame mid-century option that suited my room and taste.

Once I narrowed the selection, I used ArtView™, Art.com’s augmented reality tool, to preview the artwork on my wall before ordering. ArtView lets you visualize a single piece or an entire gallery arrangement at true scale so you can confirm size, placement and overall look. If you like the preview, you can purchase the prints directly from the app; they arrive fully framed and ready to hang. That ease-of-use made designing a gallery wall so much less stressful.

After hanging the artwork and swapping a few pillows, the room felt refreshed and finished. Because I tend to be indecisive about art, the ability to try several combinations virtually was especially helpful — it saved time and reduced the guesswork. Anyone else get stuck deciding on prints and frames?

In the end I chose two pieces from the mid-century gallery section: a black-and-white geometric print called Tropical by Seventy Tree and Study21 by Jaime Derringer (you may know her as the founder of Design Milk). I love how the pair complements the room’s color palette and mid-century styling. What do you think?
