Painting and Pastels: Creative After-Work Rituals to Unwind

Recently I started painting again purely for enjoyment — a simple way to step out of my head and unwind from a busy schedule. It’s become a pleasant ritual that helps me transition from work mode to home mode. Spending a few minutes with brush and color feels like a gentle bridge between the fast pace of the office and the slower rhythm of the evening.

At work my brain is usually in high gear: decisions, deadlines and constant movement. Making the immediate jump from that environment to full-on relaxation often feels abrupt and difficult, like trying to stop a car on a dime. Carving out a short creative break helps me ease that shift. I set up a small assortment of paints or inks, take a brush in hand, and allow myself to get lost in color for five, fifteen, sometimes thirty minutes. Nothing elaborate — just a little time to calm a frazzled mind and land in a better place.

Salty and sweet

Do you have an end-of-day ritual like this? I’d love to know what you do to strip away the day’s chaos and relax. Whether it’s a small creative habit, a short walk, or a favorite indulgence, those little routines can make a big difference in how the evening unfolds.

Skinny Cow reached out to share the idea behind their #TheNewSkinny campaign, which celebrates showing your authentic self by simplifying what’s unnecessary. They’ve refined their frozen treats to remove unfamiliar-sounding additives and focus on straightforward, indulgent flavors. That idea of simplifying — removing noise to reveal what matters — resonates with me and with my after-work ritual of painting. It’s a reminder that small, intentional choices can help create calm and pleasure.

And yes, a sweet treat is a lovely way to cap off a long day. Right now my studio freezer always has the Simply Amazing Salted Caramel Pretzel Bars on hand for a quick pick-me-up. They combine creamy caramel, chocolate, crunchy pretzels, and fudge with ice cream — a satisfying mix of salty and sweet that feels like a small celebration after a productive day.

Today happens to be National Ice Cream Day, making it a perfect moment to enjoy a frozen treat. Consider picking up NEW Skinny Cow frozen treats at your local grocery store if you’re in the mood for something simple and indulgent.
