I enjoy pairing fresh, seasonal fruit with something rich and indulgent during the summer. When I started planning a dessert bar idea for warm-weather gatherings, this shortcake dessert bar came to mind immediately. It’s simple, beautiful, and perfect for holiday celebrations like July Fourth.
You can use store-bought shortcake biscuits—Trader Joe’s makes a great option—or bake your own. All you need in addition are bowls of homemade whipped cream and a selection of sliced seasonal fruits. I sometimes add a few edible flowers for decoration; they’re often available in the fresh herbs section at grocery stores and really elevate the presentation.

My favorite fruits to include on a shortcake bar are:
- white nectarines
- yellow peaches
- strawberries
- blueberries
- blackberries
- mango
Prepare the fruits by slicing them and arranging each type in its own bowl along the table. Place a generous stack of shortcake biscuits nearby and set out a large bowl of homemade whipped cream. Guests can assemble their own shortcakes, choosing their favorite fruit combinations and toppings. This setup is ideal for summer entertaining because it’s easy to prepare ahead and lets guests serve themselves so you can relax and enjoy the party.
