Sun-Kissed Summer Nail Art Tutorial: Bright Tips & Simple Designs

A summer inspired nail art tutorial

Keeping with the summer theme I can’t stop talking about, today I’m sharing a simple, summer-inspired nail art tutorial. The look is subtle and modern, with colors that call to mind pool towels and beach balls—cheerful without being over the top.

Full disclosure: we actually photographed this look weeks ago (the same day as another project), but I saved it for the heart of summer. Now that the season is here, it’s the perfect time to try it.

Materials:

  • Base coat
  • Three contrasting nail polish colors
  • Top coat
  • Dotting tool

Instructions:

1. Start by applying a base coat to protect your nails. Once it’s dry, apply one to two coats of your chosen base color.

2. After the base color is completely dry (allow plenty of time), use two pieces of washi tape to create thin stripes about 1/8 to 1/4 inch wide on each nail. Vary the placement of the tape on different nails to keep the design interesting. Paint a contrasting color on the exposed sections of the nail.

3. Wait until the polish is fully dry again. Use a dotting tool to add a large polka dot in a third contrasting color on one nail of each hand for a playful accent.

4. Once everything is dry, finish with a top coat to seal the design and add shine. A quick-drying top coat works best to avoid smudging.
