Thrift Store Makeover: Transform Finds in Under 1 Hour

DIY ombre chair makeover with just two supplies (in under an hour)

Some time ago I found a pair of simple dining chairs that needed a refresh. I liked the spindles and the overall silhouette, but the finish made them look a little dated.

Using Valspar’s new Furniture Paint, I turned that thrift-store find into a pink ombre statement chair in under an hour of hands-on work (drying time not included).

Valspar recently introduced two products aimed at DIY furniture and cabinetry projects: Furniture Paint and Cabinet Enamel. They’re designed to be user-friendly for home projects, and I expect I’ll be using them on plenty of upcoming studio makeovers.

Material-wise, this project requires just two things: a can of Valspar Furniture Paint and a quality paint brush. The paint needs minimal prep—on these chairs I only wiped away dust and debris—so it’s fast to start and quick to complete. The simplicity made it easy to check this DIY off my list.

Quick tip: I initially worried about visible brush strokes while painting, but once the paint dried the surface was smooth and professional-looking. Don’t be alarmed if you see marks while working—they usually level out and give a polished finish.

I used the Warm Pink 1006-2B color and loved the result. Pastel shades are a favorite of mine, and I’m already considering collecting more chairs like these and painting each one a different pastel to create a rainbow of seats.

If you like DIY makeovers, Valspar’s “Rehab Project” video series features short transformations using these new paints and clear project walkthroughs. One of my favorites from their recipe card section is a mid-century bar cart update.

Would you try this ombre technique on a piece that needs updating? It would be beautiful on a dresser or buffet, but the look also suits side tables, benches, or a small cabinet. I’d love to hear which furniture pieces you think would benefit from a subtle ombre treatment.

P.S. Sorry if the title put a certain song in your head—I couldn’t resist the reference.
