Why People Choose Handmade: The Key Reason Behind the Purchase

When I sat down at my computer to write this post, I found myself staring at a blank screen for nearly an hour. Not because I had nothing to say, but because this subject carries so many nuances that I wanted to choose my words deliberately.

The value of buying handmade isn’t as straightforward as it might appear. Many people try to simplify it to fit their own perspective, but the reality is more layered.

Each person’s reasons for buying handmade are as varied and complex as the topic itself. There are many layers to consider, and everyone seems to have an opinion—which is natural and expected.

Each of us has our own truth.

We all have personal motivations for supporting the handmade movement. It’s worth remembering that people’s reasons differ, and that’s okay. As we participate in this shared journey, the key point to keep in mind is this:

We all buy handmade for different reasons…

1. Some of us feel a sense of connection and community when we buy an item crafted by another person.

2. Some of us prefer the quality and care of handmade products over mass-produced, cheaper alternatives, viewing our purchases as a quiet—or bold—rejection of mass manufacturing.

3. Some practice mindful spending, treating every dollar as a meaningful extension of our values.

4. Some view purchases as direct acts of support and appreciation for the artisan.

5. Some are drawn to the originality and authenticity that handmade items offer.

6. Some simply like handmade goods “just because.”

7. Some follow an eco-friendly approach, choosing handmade for environmental reasons.

8. And some of us find that several or all of these reasons resonate at once.

Want to know the best part about the motivations listed above—and the many others that aren’t listed?

No single reason is more right or wrong than another.

Despite this post being titled “The number one reason why we buy handmade,” there isn’t a single, definitive reason. There are many valid reasons to choose handmade over mass-produced goods. Your reason is as valid as mine, and mine is as valid as yours. There’s room for everyone’s perspective.
