This is my last weekend at home before I leave on a trip next week, so I’ve been quietly working on several DIY projects to publish while I’m away.
For a moment I felt proud of finally getting ahead for once — and then I found a DIY spiral staircase. Yes, an actual spiral staircase you can build yourself. I nearly fainted. Clearly there’s always something bigger to tackle. But before that DIY sends me into early retirement, here are seven weekend projects to try:
1. Finger-knit hanging plant holder — a simple, cozy way to display plants around the home.
2. Renter-friendly sunglasses holder — keep your shades organized without damaging walls.
3. How to make standard pillowcases — a straightforward sewing project to refresh your bedroom linens.
4. Splattered wood coasters — an easy, artsy craft that makes great gifts.
5. DIY spiral staircase — an ambitious, impressive build for advanced makers.
6. Bead chandelier — a striking statement light you can customize to match your decor.
7. Entryway coat hooks — practical, attractive wall hooks to tidy up jackets and bags.
Each of these projects ranges from quick and simple to challenging and rewarding, so pick one that fits your weekend timeframe and skill level. The simpler ideas—plant hangers, coasters, pillowcases, sunglasses holders, and hooks—can usually be completed in an afternoon with basic supplies. The bead chandelier may take a weekend depending on your design and finishing, while the spiral staircase is a major undertaking: plan carefully, check structural and safety requirements, and only attempt it if you have the necessary tools and experience.
Tips for a productive DIY weekend:
- Choose one project and gather all materials before you begin to avoid interruptions.
- Read the full tutorial and note tricky steps or special tools in advance.
- Set aside a clean, well-lit workspace and protect surfaces with drop cloths or scrap cardboard.
- Take your time with measuring and cutting—accuracy saves rework.
- Share the fun: some projects are faster and more enjoyable with a friend or family member helping.
Whether you want a fast, satisfying craft or a weekend-long build, these projects offer a variety of styles and difficulties. If you try one, take photos and enjoy the process—DIY is as much about the experience as the finished result.
Have a lovely weekend.
