Last-minute ideas for Valentine’s Day? Plant-themed valentines are always a hit.

There are so many Valentine’s ideas, but ones that include plants are among the best. This plant valentine is super simple and easily adapted for classroom valentines, teacher gifts, partners, or friends.
I’ll admit I’m one of those people who believes a plant is an appropriate gift for any occasion—because they truly are.
DIY Plant Valentines
This project is easy: choose a plant, place it in a small pot, and add a handwritten label. The result feels thoughtful and personal, and who doesn’t appreciate a little green gift?
A delightful part of this idea is involving kids to write name tags or messages. Their handwriting and drawings make the gifts extra meaningful.
If you have the time, you can even use cuttings from your own garden through simple plant propagation to create multiple gifts.
For labels, I ordered premade plant tags that were inexpensive, but you can just as easily create your own from thin cardboard—like a cereal box—or any craft materials you have on hand.

Plants to Use
Virtually any plant will work, and the best choice depends on the recipient. Here are a few reliably good options:
- String of turtles — a unique trailing plant with a turtle-shell leaf pattern that’s non-toxic to pets.
- Variegated plants — leaves with two or more colors are eye-catching and a special treat for plant lovers.
- Satin pothos — offers interesting leaf patterns and is easy to care for.
- Succulents — plentiful, affordable, and forgiving for less experienced plant owners.
- Mini rubber plants — compact and attractive, a nice small gift option.
Planters and Containers
To make the gift feel even more personal, customize the planter. Hand-decorated pots or DIY containers add charm and show extra effort.
Simple, budget-friendly ideas include wrapping small nursery pots with newsprint, old calendar pages, or decorative paper. You can also make or paint small planters to match the recipient’s style.

P.S. If plant valentines aren’t your thing, there are plenty of other homemade Valentine’s and classroom valentine ideas to explore—simple, creative projects that still feel heartfelt and personal.
