I’ve been exploring quick, simple DIY jewelry projects lately, and this brass-and-leather necklace is one of my favorites. It blends an earthy, modern look with easy construction—you can make it in under 30 minutes using a short length of brass tubing, a scrap of thick leather, and a few basic tools. The result is a minimalist, tactile piece that works well with casual or slightly dressier outfits.
Materials Needed for DIY Brass and Leather Necklace
- Round brass tube (about 1/8 inch diameter or larger)
- Small pipe or tube cutter
- Thick leather scrap (a 5-inch square is plenty)
- 24-inch cord
- Leather hole punch
- Ruler or tape measure
- Sharp cutting blade (X-Acto or similar)
How to Make a DIY Brass and Leather Necklace
1. Measure and cut the brass tube. Mark a length of roughly 3.5 inches on the brass and clamp it into a small pipe or tube cutter. Rotate the tool around the tube while tightening gradually until the piece snaps cleanly off. The cutter makes a precise, easy cut and gives you a neat, wearable tube.
2. Prepare and cut the leather. Wet the leather briefly under running water to soften the fibers; this makes it easier to cut smoothly. Measure a semi-circle about 4 inches wide and cut it out with a sharp blade. If you have an object with the correct diameter, trace it to help guide the curve for an even, consistent shape.

3. Punch holes for the cord. Use a leather hole punch to make two holes near the straight edge of the semi-circle, keeping them about 1/4 inch from each side edge. These openings will anchor the cord and hold the brass tube in place.
4. Assemble the necklace. Lay the brass tube along the straight edge of the leather and thread your cord through the punched holes so the tube sits centered on the leather. Tie knots behind the leather to secure the tube and prevent it from sliding. Wrap the cord so it forms a double strand around the neck and tie decorative knots on the front ends if you like. Trim any excess and adjust knot placement until the piece sits comfortably and evenly.

Tips and variations: If you prefer a more colorful or polished look, paint or dye the leather before assembling the necklace. You can also swap the cord for a colored waxed cotton, suede lace, or thin leather cord to change texture and tone. Experiment with brass tube lengths, leather shapes, and cord styles to create multiple variations—this basic design adapts well to different sizes and aesthetics.
