Build an Eames-Inspired Molecule Sculpture for Your Bookcase or Table

This project is for anyone who loves design (and a little science). I recently made an Eames-inspired molecule sculpture for my coffee table and wanted to share how easy and effective it is. It’s the quirky finishing touch the table needed—and it works beautifully on a bookshelf or desk, too.

Supplies to Make an Eames-Inspired Molecule Sculpture

  • Wood round beads (1 inch diameter or larger)
  • Wood dowel rod (3/16 inch diameter or larger)
  • Wood or craft glue
  • Hand saw or similar cutting tool
  • Sandpaper
  • Drill and drill bit
  • Clamp or bench vise for safety
  • (Optional) Acrylic paint and brush

How to Make an Eames-Inspired Molecule Sculpture

1. Drill holes through the wooden beads. Secure each bead in a clamp or bench vise for safety while drilling. Choose a drill bit that matches the diameter of your dowel rod—for example, use a 3/16″ bit for a 3/16″ dowel.

Tip: Drill holes at varying angles and add multiple holes to some beads. That gives you more layout options when assembling your sculpture.

2. Cut the dowel rod into short lengths. Pieces around 2.5 to 3 inches are a good starting point, but you can vary lengths to add visual interest.

3. Smooth any rough edges from drilling and cutting with sandpaper so all parts fit cleanly and safely.

4. If you want color, paint the beads or dowels now. I used several shades of blue for the beads and left the dowels natural. Allow paint to dry completely before assembling.

5. Assemble the sculpture by inserting the dowel pieces into the drilled holes in the beads. Experiment with different configurations until you find a shape and size that fits your space. You can recreate real molecule structures for inspiration or invent an abstract arrangement—both look great.

6. When you’re happy with the design, secure the connections with wood or craft glue. Add a small amount of glue to the ends of the dowel pieces before inserting them into the bead holes, wipe away any excess, and let the piece dry according to the glue manufacturer’s instructions.

The finished sculpture makes a playful, modern accent on a coffee table, bookshelf, desk, or in a child’s room—just be sure to glue all parts securely if it will be accessible to small children to avoid any choking hazards.

Where would you display this piece in your home, and which color palette would you choose?

P.S. This project had been on my to-do list for over a year—originally I planned to make ornament-sized versions for the holidays—but I’m glad I finally made the full sculpture. It’s simple, affordable, and adds a smart, sculptural touch to any room.
