DIY Wall Weaving Hack: Create Modern Woven Art for Your Home

DIY wall art weaving hack

When I first created a DIY floor rug, readers asked how to add color without complex tools. This project began as an answer to that question and evolved into a quick, accessible wall-hanging that mimics handwoven art. You don’t need a loom or special equipment—just yarn, a grid-like netting, and a little time. I’m calling it a wall art weaving hack because it recreates a woven look in a fraction of the time.

This version uses Peruvian wool yarn for a plush, colorful finish. The yarn shown here was generously provided by We Are Knitters and produced a thick, soft texture perfect for wall art. If you want to try it yourself, there’s a giveaway at the end of the article for a $200 gift card to We Are Knitters.

Materials

  • Thick wool yarn (I used Peruvian wool from We Are Knitters)
  • Scissors
  • Multi-use netting cut to approximately 12 x 24 inches
  • Wood dowel (optional) for hanging

Notes: For a 12 x 24 inch piece I used roughly 3 to 4 skeins (each skein about 87 yards). The whole project took about two hours from start to finish. The colors shown are lead, pearl grey, and mauve, but many color options are available depending on the look you want.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Create yarn loops: Wrap the yarn around three fingers until you have gone around at least eight or nine times, then cut the yarn from the skein so you have a looped bundle.
  2. Attach to netting: Take the bundle off your fingers and push one end of the loops through a single square or cell of the netting. The netting acts like a grid, holding the looped yarn securely in place.
  3. Secure the loop: Pull the other end of the loops through the adjacent cell so the loop creates a simple, secure stitch across the netting. No knots or extra fastenings are required.
  4. Repeat and vary: Continue making and attaching bundles until the netting is fully covered. Alternate yarn colors and the orientation of your bundles (horizontal, vertical, or staggered) to create texture, pattern, and visual interest.
  5. Finish and hang: If desired, attach a wood dowel across the top or bottom and tie yarn around the dowel to secure it. Add a hanging loop to the dowel and your woven wall art is ready to display.

This method produces a soft, sculptural wall hanging with the look of weaving but without the time or skill normally required. The netting provides a sturdy base and allows you to experiment with color blocking, stripes, or an all-over textured field. Because the yarn is thick, the finished piece has depth and visual warmth perfect for entryways, living rooms, nurseries, or home offices.

Design Tips

  • Mix colors and weights: Pair thick Peruvian wool with lighter strands for contrast and layered texture.
  • Play with orientation: Adding rows vertically and horizontally breaks up uniformity and creates movement.
  • Trim and shape: After filling the netting, trim stray ends to shape a straight edge or create a deliberate fringe.
  • Scale up: Increase netting size and use more yarn to create a larger statement piece.
