Color-Blocked Nail Art Ideas: DIY Color Block Manicure Designs

Color Blocked DIY Nail Art

Here’s another fun nail DIY just in time for Valentine’s Day—an easy color block manicure that delivers bold, modern results. I also used these cute 3-D cat cards as a prop for the photos (not a cat lady, I promise). This tutorial is ideal if you want a striking look that’s quick to create at home.

Supplies you’ll need

  • Three nail polish colors (choose hues that contrast well)
  • Clear base coat
  • Clear top coat
  • Washi tape
  • Scissors

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Prep nails with a clear base coat. Paint each nail with one of your selected colors—the color you choose now will form the central block on each nail. Let this coat dry completely before continuing.
  2. Cut small, slightly imperfect triangles from a strip of washi tape, making each one a little longer than your nail. Place a triangle onto each nail, varying the direction of the triangle across fingers so each nail looks different.
  3. With the tape in place, paint the exposed sides of each nail using your other two polish colors. You may need two thin coats for full coverage; allow each coat to dry thoroughly before applying the next.
  4. When the polish is fully dry, carefully remove the washi tape to reveal the color block shapes. Finish with a clear top coat to seal and smooth the design.

This technique is simple but versatile. Try cooler palettes—blues and greens—for a different mood, or experiment with a grayscale scheme for a minimalist take. Mixing glossy and matte top coats can also change the effect, and switching up the triangle placement creates endless variations.
