Smart DIY Wall Hooks to Organize Your Entryway Quickly

With the new year here, I started planning ways to get more organized. After a quick trip to the craft store I came up with a simple wall-hook idea to give jackets, bags, scarves and keys a proper place to hang.

These DIY wall hooks double as wall art when not in use — their geometric shapes read like a modern installation on the wall — and they work exactly like any hook when you need them. They’re fast and inexpensive to make with just a few tools and materials. Below is a straightforward woodworking-style project you can tackle in an afternoon.

Note: I originally developed this project for Domino and am sharing it here with permission.

Materials

  • Double-ended screws
  • Wood blocks in varied sizes and dowel rods (2–3 inch diameter recommended)
  • Pliers
  • Drill
  • Clamp or vise
  • (Optional) Acrylic paint and paintbrush

Step-by-step

1. If you’re using large dowel rods, secure the rod in a clamp or vise and cut it into 3–5 inch lengths with a saw or jigsaw. Sand any rough edges.

2. Clamp a wood block and drill a small pilot hole into the face of the block — just deep enough to seat the double-ended screw (do not drill all the way through).

3. Thread one end of the double-ended screw into the pilot hole and use pliers to tighten it until the screw is seated about halfway into the wood block.

4. If you prefer the natural look, the hooks are ready to hang once the screw is fully secured into the block and the external threads are ready to accept a wall anchor or go directly into a stud. If you want color, paint the ends of the dowels or the faces of the blocks with acrylic paint before attaching the screw. I experimented with two-tone painted dowels, but ultimately preferred the raw wood blocks for a cleaner entryway aesthetic.

Tip: For heavy items, always install an appropriate wall anchor before screwing the hook into the wall to ensure a secure hold.

These little wooden circle hooks look like bubbles on the wall and are especially attractive when grouped. Mix sizes and shapes to create a custom arrangement that functions as both art and storage.
