DIY Star Pillows: Sewing Guide for Holiday and Year-Round Decor

Star pillow tutorial! Is there anything more festive than metallic star pillows at the holidays? Maybe — but these Christmas throw pillows are too fun to pass up.

I’ve made many DIY pillows over the years, but none as shiny as these until now. If you love metallics, seasonal decor, or star shapes, this star pillow project is for you.

Once the holidays are over, the free star template included in the materials list can be used to create a less flashy version—stone-washed linen, cotton, or a patterned fabric would all work well for year‑round pillows.

Making a Star Pillow

Christmas throw pillows are an easy way to introduce holiday style without committing to over-the-top decorating. Pillows are a subtle, flexible choice that still bring seasonal cheer.

These star-shaped pillows offer a festive look without being garish. The metallic gold and silver fabrics read holiday-ready, but the star silhouette is universal enough to stay out after the season ends.

I’ve been using these star pillows in my son’s room; the playful shape fits a nursery or kid’s space really well. They also look elegant on a velvet chair or a modern sofa—especially when made in non-metallic fabrics for everyday use.

With the downloadable template, you can make large, statement star pillows like mine or scale the pattern down for smaller accent stars that create a more casual feel.

Materials Needed

• metallic fabric (gold or silver)

• poly fill

• sewing machine
• hand needle

If you want a larger star pillow like the ones shown, blow the template up to the scale you need. As a guideline, enlarging it to roughly twice the original size produces a comparable large pillow.

Note about Metallic Fabric

The metallic fabrics I used were slightly stretchy, which made them trickier to sew. If you’re not experienced with stretch fabric, choose a non-stretch metallic or a stable woven metallic fabric to make sewing easier and avoid puckering.

Instructions: How to Make Star Pillows

Step 1: Print and cut the star template. Fold your fabric with right sides together “hot dog style,” then fold again “hamburger style” so you have four layers. Align the straight edge of the template on the folded fabric and trace with a pencil. Cut a 1/2″ seam allowance outside the traced line. After cutting you should have two identical star pieces.

Step 2: On one piece, flip the template and trace the opposite side so you have a clear sewing line. Place the two star pieces together with right sides facing in and pin around the edges.

Step 3: Sew along the traced line with a zig-zag stitch, leaving about a 4-inch gap so you can turn and stuff the pillow. Use the smallest zig-zag stitch your machine allows to minimize bunching.

Tip: The silver pillow was sewn with a slightly larger zig-zag and shows some bunching. The gold pillow used a very small zig-zag and has a smoother finish. If you notice puckering, reduce stitch width and length or stabilize the fabric before sewing.

Step 4: Turn the star right side out and begin stuffing with poly fill. Pay special attention to each point, using small amounts of stuffing and a chopstick or blunt tool to push filling into the tips for a crisp, even shape.

Step 5: When you’re happy with the fill, close the gap with an invisible hand stitch (ladder stitch) for a neat finish.
