10-Minute DIY: Make Rope Bowls with Yarn Tutorial

Rope-style yarn bowls have been a popular DIY for years, and I recently discovered a softer, more natural yarn that gives them a fresh, unique look. I loved how these turned out and wanted to share the simple process so you can make them too.

This gentler, more organic take on the classic rope bowl is incredibly easy. You can make one from start to finish in under ten minutes, and if you’re quick with your sewing machine, a small bowl can take as little as five minutes. Use these for desk organization, nursery storage, or as a decorative catchall on a shelf or credenza.

Materials and Tools Needed

  • Martha Stewart Crafts Mambo Yarn (the specific yarn gives the best result)
  • Thread that matches the yarn color, or use the outer thread from the yarn skein
  • Sewing machine

How to Make DIY Yarn Bowls in Minutes

The final appearance of the bowls depends a lot on the yarn choice. I recommend the Martha Stewart Crafts Mambo Yarn for a soft, rounded look; one inexpensive skein makes two to three small bowls. Follow these steps:

1. Start by coiling the yarn several times to form the center of the base and secure the first coils with two pins. Be sure to backstitch to lock the beginning.

2. Sew a straight line across the coil to create a stable base.

3. Switch to a zigzag stitch on your machine and continue coiling and sewing the yarn together. A narrower stitch width helps hold the coils more securely and keeps the bowl tidy.

4. Once the base is the size you want, tilt the work so the base sits at about a 90-degree angle and begin building up the sides. Continue the coiling and zigzag stitching to raise the walls of the bowl until the sides reach your preferred height.

5. To finish, angle the end of the yarn gradually toward the inside of the bowl while sewing. Backstitch to secure the end, then trim the excess yarn.

The result is a softer, more pliable bowl than those made with stiff rope, so keep that in mind when choosing how to use them. They’re ideal for holding lightweight items: office supplies, small baby items, yarn scraps, or as an attractive container for books and small accents on a credenza.

This organic-modern version of the classic rope bowl is quick, inexpensive, and very beginner-friendly. Give it a try—you can make several in an afternoon using just one skein of yarn.
