Jeff and I have moved eight times in the last twelve years. Whether that makes us wildly spontaneous, a little bit crazy, or simply experienced, we’ve learned a lot about how to move without losing our minds.
Having just completed another move over the weekend, everything is still fresh. I compiled the most useful lessons we’ve learned—practical tips that turn moving from chaos into a manageable process. These are the essentials for packing, transporting, and unpacking efficiently while minimizing stress.
Top 7 Tips for Packing, Moving, and Unpacking Without Losing Your Mind
1. Get help. If you can afford it, hire movers. Professional help reduces stress dramatically and often costs less than you expect. Movers typically offer insurance—choose the coverage so you’re protected if something is damaged. That security alone removes a huge chunk of worry. When we moved everything ourselves one time, poor loading damaged a couple of favorite furniture pieces—lesson learned.
If hiring full-service movers isn’t an option, look for free or low-cost help—friends who’ll work for pizza do exist—or use a hybrid approach: move smaller items yourself and reserve professionals for big furniture. If movers bill by the hour, this method saves money while reducing the physical strain on you.
2. Don’t wait. Procrastination is common, but packing a little each night dramatically lowers stress. Start with rooms you use least—the guest bedroom, spare bathroom, storage closet—and slowly work toward frequently used spaces. Breaking the job into small nightly tasks makes the whole process far less overwhelming.
3. Use sturdy containers. On this recent move we rented reusable plastic containers instead of relying solely on cardboard. Reusable bins were the fastest we’ve ever used for packing and unpacking: they’re durable, stackable, and can be moved on a dolly to transport multiple bins at once. If reusable containers aren’t available, good-quality cardboard boxes still work—flatten and store them for future use to save money and reduce waste. Keep extra packing blankets, paper, and tape together so it’s easy to find when needed.
4. Label clearly. Label every box or bin as you pack with the exact room it should go to in the new home. Clear, consistent labels speed unloading and eliminate the “where does this go?” confusion during the hustle of moving day.
5. Clean before you unpack. If possible, deep-clean the new place before moving items in—bathrooms, kitchen surfaces, floors, and drawers—so unpacked items go straight into a fresh, ready space. If cleaning first isn’t feasible, at minimum wipe down key surfaces before removing items from boxes to avoid contaminating clean possessions.
6. Deliver to the right room. When arriving at your new home, take each box directly to the room indicated on its label. Dropping items in their designated rooms saves time and prevents piles of mixed boxes that slow unpacking and create cluttered hallways.
7. Unpack quickly. Unpack as soon as you can. The longer boxes sit, the harder it becomes to get organized. Prioritize essentials first—kitchen basics, bedding, toiletries—and then work through non-essentials. A quick, focused unpacking session prevents weeks of searching for items you know you packed.
