Minimal Wall Hanging DIY That Doubles as a Stylish Plant Holder

Inspired by the popular necklace silhouette, this large-scale DIY wall planter combines minimalist wall art with practical plant display. It works beautifully with eucalyptus, dried flowers, air plants, or other lightweight botanical accents.

It’s very budget-friendly (under $15), easy to customize to any length, and perfect for party decor or everyday styling.

Instructions

1. Mark and drill the end hanging holes in the wood. Place marks centered across the width and about 1″ from each end. Clamp the wood securely and drill the two holes. In this project a 5/16″ drill bit was used for the hanging holes.

2. Drill the planting/display recesses using a larger bit (a 1/2″ spade bit or the size that fits your plants/accessories). For a 22″ board, spacing the three holes about 5″ apart worked well—adjust spacing and quantity to suit your board length. Always clamp the wood to a solid surface before drilling.

3. Drill two holes in the leather strip for attachment. Lay a scrap piece of wood beneath the leather to provide a stable backing and clamp everything in place. Using a small drill bit (a 5/64″ bit was used here), make one hole about 1/2″ in from each end of the leather—this placement is slightly different from the wood holes and helps the leather sit neatly behind the wood.

Note: The scrap wood provides a safe backing when drilling through leather and prevents tear-out.

4. Sand the wood to smooth any rough edges or splinters from drilling. Take care around the drilled recesses so the holes look clean and finished.

5. Prepare the cotton piping or cord by wrapping tape tightly around one end to create a firm tip—this makes it much easier to feed through the holes. Thread the cord from the top of the end wood hole, through the corresponding hole in the leather, then back through the wood from the underside to the top, as shown in the photos.

6. Secure the cord with a tight triple knot at the top of the wood. Trim any excess so you have one long strand per side connecting the leather and wood.

7. Repeat the threading and knotting steps with the second piece of piping on the other side. Once both sides are secured, tie the two cords together at the top to form a hanging loop. Hang the piece and place eucalyptus, dried flowers, air plants, or similar into the drilled recesses.
