Wedding Registry Tips from a Real Bride: What Actually Worked

Dream wedding registry!

I recently read that the most popular day to get engaged is Christmas Eve (followed by Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve). With the holidays just passed and another coming up, I found myself thinking back to when Jeff and I got engaged and then married—and the many choices in between.

I distinctly remember that we had no idea what we were doing when it came to the wedding and registry. Not marriage itself—we knew we wanted to build a life together—but the logistics: the shower, the gifts, the registry. There were so many decisions it felt overwhelming. I also insisted on doing everything myself—the DIY décor, hand-making bouquets, and so on. In hindsight, I don’t recommend trying to do it all.

When guests started asking if we had a registry, we scrambled something together without much thought. We’d already been living together for years and had most of the basics, so our list leaned toward practical items—extra kitchen tools and cookware—rather than the more personal pieces that would make our house feel like home: artwork, decorative objects, and the kinds of things that reflect your combined taste.

Because of that experience, I partnered with Zola, a modern registry service, to help couples who feel lost at the registry stage. I created a “dream registry” to show how to build a thoughtful, design-forward list from the start. The selection blends well-made, practical items for kitchen and entertaining with special décor and home pieces that help a house feel unique. There are over 40 curated products on the list, chosen to simplify the process and make the home you’re building together feel intentional.

Zola offers tens of thousands of gifts from hundreds of brands, plus options to register for experiences and cash funds, which I love—who wouldn’t want a little extra travel money or a fun experience to start married life? Consolidating everything in one place is so much easier for guests than the scattershot approach we ended up using years ago, long before services like this existed.

I built a Zola registry myself to test the experience. Placing orders was easy, shipping was fast, and the pieces I bought arrived quickly and looked great. Below I’ve shown how I styled several items I purchased from Zola—many of which are also on my dream registry.

Simple outdoor dinner styling—mixing practical tabletop pieces with sculptural accessories creates an inviting setting. A few featured items: recycled double old-fashioned glass set, simple salad plates, sand-finish vases, a round tray and striped napkins. These small touches turn a meal into an occasion.

For a minimal, earthy modern entryway, consider a meet bench, pleated planters, a simple pendant light, a textured throw pillow, an oversized mirror and a runner rug. An intentionally curated entry sets the tone for the rest of the home.

Now for the official registry picks. With tens of thousands of products available, narrowing the list took time—I easily could have added 300 items—but I focused on favorites that balance beauty and function so guests aren’t overwhelmed. If you’d like extra structure, Zola provides starter guides and registry checklists to help you begin.

Kitchen and entertaining essentials are the backbone of many registries. I included both items I already use and love and others I’m hoping to add—like a favorite saucepot. Key items I recommend for a balanced kitchen list:

  • Tosca dish storage rack
  • Muted saucepot with lid
  • Heritage loaf pan
  • Serving set
  • Kettle teapot
  • 4-slice classic toaster
  • Covered round casserole dish
  • Grill tongs
  • Cast iron skillet
  • 20-piece flatware set
  • Drainer rack
  • Salt & pepper grinder set
  • Classic French press
  • 5-qt tilt-head stand mixer + ice cream attachment
  • Belgian waffle maker with pancake plate
  • Simple glass sets
  • Espresso maker
  • Marble enamelware coffee pot

On to decorating—the part I love most. Many items on this section are ones I own and can vouch for: grid-pattern bed linens, planters, benches and more. Thoughtful décor helps a house feel warm and lived-in. A sample of my décor picks:

  • Simple linen duvet cover
  • Dimmable concrete lamp
  • Norm oval mirror
  • Afternoon bench
  • Large concrete pot
  • 2-piece sweeper & funnel set
  • Conic table lamp
  • Scented candle
  • Jewelry box
  • Meet bench
  • Leather weave accent chair
  • GM30 pendant
  • Cross throw
  • Wool striped rug
  • Plant box and plant stand
  • Classic 7-piece sheet and duvet bundle (windowpane)
  • Linen pillow with tassels
