These leather pouches are incredibly useful for everyday life and make thoughtful, stylish gifts. Best of all, you can sew any of these three designs in under 30 minutes.

With Mother’s Day and other gift-giving occasions in mind, I’ve been thinking about small, practical presents that anyone would love. These simple leather pouches fit the bill: cute, durable and useful for everything from makeup essentials and cash to business cards and travel accessories.
They’re compact enough to toss in a purse, carry-on, or drawstring bag and can be adapted for many uses. Below you’ll find materials and step-by-step instructions for three easy sewn leather pouch styles. Each one is quick to make and looks polished even with minimal sewing experience. How to Make DIY Sewn Leather Pouches
I first made one of these pouches for a workshop and later created two more variations to offer different shapes and closures. Below are clear instructions for each of the three pouch styles shown in the photos.

#1: Long Wrap Clutch
1. Cut a single rectangular piece of leather to the size you want. A recommended starting dimension is about 10″ x 11″, but you can adjust based on what you plan to carry.
2. (Optional) For the look in the photo, cut a long notch at each of the two long ends, leaving about 1″ at the outer edges; this slightly reduces the usable dimensions but creates the tapered finish shown.
3. Sew a decorative stitch around the two ends you may have notched. This reinforces the edges and creates a finished detail.
4. Fold each end toward the center where you stitched and sew those folded ends down on both sides to create the pockets or closures. Backstitch at the start and finish to secure the seams.
5. Flip the pouch over and stitch a long cord to the center of the back at one end. I used a 36″ cord so it can be wrapped multiple times around the closed clutch—perfect for holding makeup brushes, pens, or other taller items. Fill and wrap to close.

#2: Small Rounded Button Pouch
1. Cut a long rectangle and round one end to form the flap. A good starting size is about 11″ x 3.75″ (height measured from top of curve to flat bottom).
2. Fold the rectangle into thirds lengthwise, so the curved end becomes the flap. Sew the bottom section together at both sides to form the pouch body. Backstitch at the beginning and end of each seam.
3. Sew a decorative stitch around the curved flap edge for a clean finished look.
4. Mark where you want the button to sit on the rounded flap and punch a hole with the leather punch.
5. Fold the flap over and use the hole as a guide to mark the corresponding spot on the pouch body; punch that second hole as well.
6. Assemble the screw-back button through the hole on the pouch body from the inside and attach the button cap on the flap so the flap hole fits over the button. Tighten the screw-back hardware to secure. The small rounded button pouch is now ready.

#3: Medium Button Pouch
1. Cut a longer rectangle and round one end for the flap. Suggested dimensions: about 10″ x 6″.
2. Fold the leather into thirds lengthwise, like the small pouch, and stitch the bottom section on both sides to form the pouch. Backstitch at the start and end of each seam.
3. Topstitch a decorative seam around the three edges of the flap to match the rest of the pouch.
4. Punch a hole where you want the button on the top flap, then fold the flap closed and transfer that hole marking to the pouch body; punch the second hole there.
5. Insert the screw piece through the hole from the back of the pouch and secure the button on the outside. Tighten the hardware so the closure is snug but functional.
6. Flip the pouch so the back faces up and stitch a short cord at the center back top (I used about a 6.5″ cord). Wrap that cord around the button to keep the pouch closed once filled.
Wrap the cord around once or twice to secure the flap; the pouch is finished and ready for jewelry, cosmetics, cards or other small items.

These pouches are excellent for storing jewelry—think a pair of handmade clay earrings—or for compact makeup storage on the go when you don’t want to carry a bulky cosmetics bag. They’re durable, customizable, and fast to make.
