Fall Style Guide: Create a Giant DIY Mood Board Organizer

How to Make a Giant DIY Mood Board Organizer

I’ve been enjoying sharing my monthly style guides, and this month I’m excited to present a fresh fall-focused guide — but with a twist. Instead of the usual printable-style guide, I turned it into a large, easy DIY project using 3M’s ScotchBlue™ Pre-Taped Painter’s Plastic.

This month’s guide doubles as a giant mood board organizer for the studio — taller than I am — dressed in my current favorite fall palette of blush and rust. It also adds practical storage: a copper caddy for current inspiration books and a small hanging area for scissors and tools. The whole board is portable and easy to repaint when you want a new color combination.

Materials for Giant DIY Mood Board Organizer

  • One large 4×8 sheet of plywood (you can cut it into a shape if you prefer and apply a base coat beforehand)
  • ScotchBlue™ Pre-Taped Painter’s Plastic (to protect the floor and to create clean color blocking)
  • Paint and brush
  • Wire basket for storage
  • Screws appropriate for your basket and plywood
  • Eyelet hooks
  • “S” hooks
  • 1–2 feet of rope for a hanging line

Note: Follow the ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Plastic package instructions for proper surface cleaning, adhesion, and removal.

Instructions

1. Prepare the plywood: If you don’t already have a painted board, cut your plywood to the desired shape and apply a base coat. I used a leftover piece already cut into a house shape and base-coated. To create the color-blocked diagonal, apply the ScotchBlue™ Pre-Taped Painter’s Plastic across the board where you want the line. Press the tape and plastic down firmly to ensure a secure seal.

2. Unroll and unfold the Painter’s Plastic to cover the lower portion of the board. Use the integrated blade to cut the tape cleanly at the end. This product functions like painter’s tape but protects larger areas and makes masking simple.

3. Paint the exposed top portion of the plywood in your chosen color. Apply additional coats as needed for even coverage.

4. After the paint has fully dried, remove the ScotchBlue™ Pre-Taped Painter’s Plastic slowly at a 45° angle, pulling the tape back onto itself to reveal a crisp line. If you delay removal, the product can still be removed cleanly for up to 14 days after painting.

5. Add storage: Measure and mark two level points for the screws that will hold your wire basket. Pre-drill and install screws, then hang the basket securely.

6. Create a hanging line: Measure and mark two level points for the eyelet hooks where you want the rope to attach. Pre-drill, screw in the eyelet hooks, feed the rope through, and knot each end. Use “S” hooks to hang scissors, clips, or decorative items from the rope.

7. Finalize and style: Add books, photos, swatches, office supplies, and other inspiration items to the board. The wire basket keeps current reading or supplies close at hand, and the rope with “S” hooks keeps frequently used tools accessible.

I typically lean the finished board against the wall next to my desk so it’s easy to move, always nearby when I need it, and out of the way when I don’t.
