This living room makeover blends organic modern and transitional styles. It’s a space I designed and decorated at my mom’s house—here’s the full reveal.

When my mom moved into her current home, the main living room was one of the spaces she didn’t know how to use. It sits directly off the front entry, so even when it was mostly unused, it was immediately visible and felt like the center of the house.
To thank her for everything she’s done for our family, I decided to gift her a room makeover. This is the space I transformed, and below I’m sharing how it all came together.
Living Room Makeover Breakdown
Our goal was to create a room that looked and felt inviting but also functioned well for everyday family use. My mom’s taste leans transitional while I prefer earthy, minimal interiors, so the finished room landed squarely in an organic modern-meets-transitional place.
Now that the makeover is done, it really feels like the heart of her home. The room has large sliding doors that open to the outdoors, bringing in light and making the space feel connected to the yard.
What did the room look like before?
Before the refresh, the room was mostly empty. The household uses a separate den as the TV room, so this front living room could serve as a dedicated seating and entertaining area.
When my mom moved in, the walls were painted a powder blue. We quickly repainted them a warm white, which made a huge difference; after that, the room sat nearly empty for months with just a single chair and a few items.
Here are a couple of before photos showing the space when it was blue and then after it was painted but before any decorating.

With that context, here’s how the space came together, starting with the rug.
Rug
I chose a soft, neutral rug to help ground the seating area—a large 9’3″ x 12′ piece in ivory. The lighter color balances the dark hardwood floors and the subtle texture makes the room feel warm and inviting underfoot.

Furniture
The sofa and chairs are from Article. The sofa is a comfortable pull-out that doubles as a guest bed—handy for holidays and overnight visitors—while the lounge chairs provide relaxed, modern seating.
The coffee table is one of my favorite pieces. It has a unique three-legged triangular base and beautiful wood grain, which gives the room character and a casual surface for puzzles, drinks, and styling.
I added a sculptural black floor lamp to echo other black accents in the room, like framed artwork and metal legs on the sofa and chairs. A budget-friendly side table complements the seating, and an existing six-drawer dresser was repurposed as a credenza, delivering helpful storage and extra surface area for styling.

Artwork
Artwork is personal, so I let my mom choose pieces she loved for above the sofa. She found a pair of works that fit the wall proportion nicely and helped define the palette for the rest of the room.
Over the credenza I created a simple plaster-based piece on an existing framed panel my mom found—an affordable DIY solution that adds texture and a custom touch to the space.

Mirror + Accessories
Using colors from the chosen artwork as inspiration, I selected accessories to tie the room together. My mom wanted a mirror to increase reflected light, so we positioned one opposite the sliding doors to bounce daylight into the darker corners.
Pillows in boucle, round forms, and muted pink tones bring softness and subtle color. Additional accents—woven baskets, ceramic vases, and bowls—add warmth, tactile contrast, and practical storage. I leaned on objects we already owned where possible and added a few curated finds to complete the look.
Plants
Plants were essential from the start. My mom loves greenery, so we included several she already had—a fiddle leaf fig among them—and added a tall dracaena to introduce height and varied leaf texture. Dracaena plants are forgiving in low-to-medium light, so they work well in interior spots that don’t get full sun.

The finished room feels like a blend of my aesthetic and my mom’s: organic materials, soft neutrals, a few sculptural black accents, and plenty of plants. It’s become the spot I gravitate toward whenever I visit her, and it now functions as a warm, welcoming living area rather than an underused entry space.
