Minimal Nightstand Styling Guide: Chic Tips for a Polished Look

For me, a nightstand comes down to just a few well-chosen items. You don’t want your nightstand so cluttered that it stops being functional, but you also don’t want it so bare that it looks awkward every time you pass it on your way out of bed.

Here are the key elements that will help you style a perfect, minimal-ish nightstand in about five minutes.

Essential Items for a Well-Styled Nightstand

At minimum you need a lighting solution plus some combination of the items below. You can use something from each category or pick just a couple—either approach works. Start with the foundation: lighting.

Lighting

Lighting is the one essential most nightstands require. A simple table lamp is the quickest route—just position it and plug it in. If you prefer a sconce, installation will take more time and may require an electrician, particularly for wired or cordless hardwired options. Wall-mounted swing-arm sconces or plug-in sconces are great alternatives if you want a clean bedside surface.

Once lighting is in place, you can layer in the rest of the elements. Below are the pieces I often use to keep a nightstand attractive but not overcrowded.

Artwork

I like artwork everywhere, including at the bedside. A small framed print or a piece that leans against the wall behind the nightstand adds visual interest and depth. Artwork creates a nice backdrop for other objects and helps ground the vignette. If artwork isn’t your thing, a mirror is another excellent option—it reflects light and makes darker corners feel brighter.

Books

A short stack of books is a classic nightstand touch. Whether they’re for bedtime reading or simply decorative, books add layers and can introduce a pop of color through their spines. A neat stack also gives you height variation without taking up much surface area.

A place for small essentials

Include a tray, bowl, or small dish to corral items like jewelry, glasses, lip balm, or cough drops. Containment keeps the surface tidy and makes it easy to find everyday items. Using a dish or tray that echoes the colors or style of your artwork ties the arrangement together without feeling too matched.

A natural element

A small plant or a simple vase with fresh or dried flowers adds life and a pleasant, calming note to your bedside. Seeing a bit of greenery when you get up in the morning can lift your mood.

A decorative accent for personality

Add one small decorative object—like a candle, a vintage trinket, or a small sculpture—to inject personality. This finishing touch makes the space feel curated and personal without overwhelming the practical essentials.

General Tips for Styling a Nightstand

1. Start by grounding the space with lighting and, if you like, artwork. Use those larger elements to guide the placement of smaller objects.

2. Vary the heights of objects to create visual balance. Typically, nothing on the nightstand will be taller than your lamp or artwork—build down from there.

3. Grouping an odd number of items often feels more natural and stylish. (A stack of books counts as a single object.)

4. If your nightstand is very small, use the wall for additional styling: a wall sconce and hung or leaning artwork can free up surface space while keeping the area attractive and functional.

P.S. Our nightstands are Ikea LIXHULT cabinets—the affordable, simple option we used as a placeholder and kept for years because they work with many styles and offer useful hidden storage for less attractive items.
