Build a Minimal Modern Desk with Storage for Under $100

A minimalist desk you can build yourself!

This is a DIY desk project. For do-it-yourself work, wood is one of my favorite materials to use. It’s versatile, relatively forgiving, and gives a clean, warm result.

I’m not a master woodworker, but I’m comfortable with a handful of straightforward power tools and small projects. I’ve built desks before—anyone remember my DIY standing desk?—so I wanted to share this minimal modern desk with built-in storage that you can make from scratch for under $100, using only a few tools and supplies.

You can definitely do this. The build is renter-friendly, budget-friendly, and can be completed in an afternoon. Follow this tutorial to make a streamlined desk with practical storage that blends into modern interiors.

How to Build a Minimal Modern Desk

This desk idea came from a home office / guest room makeover I did for Invitation Homes Make It Home Show House. After sharing the reveal on Instagram, readers asked for step-by-step details, so here’s a full tutorial to recreate the piece yourself.

The concept is simple: one side of the desk is supported by a stack of storage cubbies built into vertical legs, and the other side is mounted to the wall. That makes the desk feel light and partially floating while keeping plenty of storage within reach.

Materials and Tools Needed

  • 20″ wide, 3/4″ thick pine panels (lengths vary by cut)
  • Three 3″ L-brackets (corner braces) with screws
  • Twenty to twenty-four 1.5″ L-brackets with screws
  • Six drywall anchors (use only if you’re not attaching brackets to studs)
  • Hammer
  • Finishing nails
  • Compact circular saw (or saw of your choice)
  • Power drill with driver and drill bits
  • Level (also doubles as a straightedge)
  • Trigger clamps
  • Two sawhorses

Material Notes

I used stain-grade 3/4″ pine panels, 20″ wide. Each board’s length depends on what the store has in stock. For my build I purchased four pieces: one 20×72″, two 20×48″, and one 20×36″. You can mix and match lengths to meet the cut list below. The exact cutting dimensions are included so you can plan around available lumber.

Before You Start

Start with a quick sketch of the desk and basic measurements for your space. I originally planned a longer desk with more cubbies, but adjusted so the desk would leave room for a mirror and fit the pre-cut lumber I found at the store. Fewer cuts meant less work—so I adjusted my design to match readily available pieces.

Gather the lumber and the L-brackets before cutting to keep the process efficient. Once everything is measured and cut, you can move straight into assembly.

A DIY Desk in Four Main Steps

Step 1: Cut the wood to size

Cut all the pieces before assembly. I find it easier to do all cutting first, then switch to building. A compact circular saw with a long level clamped as a straightedge makes clean, straight cuts on wide panels. Use the tools you’re comfortable with and follow safety guidelines.

There are eight pieces for this design, though one of them is often available pre-cut. Below are the exact dimensions I used for my desk. Note: this desk is not freestanding; it mounts to the wall on one side and only has legs on the storage side.

Cut list

  • 1 tabletop: 20″ x 72″ (often available precut)
  • 2 vertical legs (storage sides): 20″ x 29.25″ each — these account for a target finished desk height of 30″ once the 3/4″ top is added
  • 3 horizontal shelves inside the storage section: 20″ x 18.5″ each
  • 2 vertical dividers for lower cubbies: 20″ x 6.75″ each

If your baseboard molding prevents the legs from sitting flush against the wall, cut notches in the back-bottom of the vertical leg pieces so they sit flat against the wall.

Types of L brackets needed for DIY desk project.

Step 2: Assemble the storage cubby / leg side

Build the storage side on the floor first, then attach it to the tabletop. Lay out all parts and start from the bottom shelf, attaching bracket supports to the vertical legs. I measured 3.5″ up from the bottom of the legs to clear baseboard molding and positioned the shelf brackets there.

Screw two 1.5″ L-brackets into each leg at that height, then attach the first shelf (20″ x 18.5″) to those bracket tops, making sure everything is level. Repeat this process to install the remaining shelves and attach the vertical dividers beneath the shelves where you want the cubby divisions—mine were slightly off-center for visual interest.

I found it easiest to secure brackets to the vertical legs first, then stand the assembly and rest the shelf on top before fastening the bracket tops. If a shelf is slightly out of level, you can gently bend the bracket top to correct the alignment.

Step 3: Attach the tabletop to the leg assembly

Set the tabletop on sawhorses and use scrap wood to raise it to the final height. Stand the storage leg assembly upright on the opposite side so the tabletop rests partially on the storage legs and on the sawhorses. Confirm everything is level.

Align the tabletop edge with the leg edge so they are flush, then drive finishing nails through the tabletop into the vertical legs across the seam to hold the pieces temporarily. After that, attach four 1.5″ L-brackets under the tabletop—two beneath each vertical leg—to secure the tabletop permanently to the legs.

Step 4: Secure the desk to the wall

With the desk assembled, anchor the tabletop to the wall. If you can screw the brackets into studs, you don’t need anchors. If you can’t hit studs, install drywall anchors first.

Attach three 3″ L-brackets between the tabletop underside and the wall: one at the far left (supporting the floating side) and two under the front of the desk spaced evenly across the span. Add a fourth bracket under the storage side if you want extra reinforcement.

For added stability, you can also drive finishing nails along the joins where shelves meet the vertical legs. I added finishing nails every two inches across those joints to make the storage section extra solid.

Styling the finished desk

After installation, style the desk with a few curated accessories: DIY desk organizers, a peg rail or wall organizer above the desk for essentials, and a couple of plants to warm the space. Use baskets and a few books on the shelves to balance function and aesthetics—these small touches keep the storage tidy and attractive.
