An effortless ponytail made with one surprising item: a small strip of felt.

Simple hair tutorials are often the best. When it comes to hair, I believe the easier the technique, the more useful it becomes. This quick DIY creates a polished, low ponytail using only a tiny strip of felt and two bobby pins—no rubber band required—and takes just a few minutes to complete.

Here’s what you’ll need to recreate the look:

Materials Needed

  • Small sheet of felt (about 1/8 inch thick if possible)
  • Scissors
  • 2 bobby pins
  • Texturizing spray
  • Comb

Effortless Ponytail Tutorial (with Felt)

1. Make the felt pony wrap. Cut a narrow strip of felt roughly 1/2 inch wide and about 7 inches long. Exact measurements aren’t critical—just eyeball it. Set the strip and two bobby pins aside.

2. Prep your hair. Start with air-dried or straight hair and apply your preferred texturizing product. A texturizing spray adds grip and volume.

3. Lightly tease your hair over the crown and mid-lengths, avoiding the sections near your face to keep the front smooth.

4. Place the felt. Position the felt strip under the section where you want the ponytail to sit. Wrap it around your hair twice, then secure the felt from underneath with the two bobby pins—push them through the underside of the felt and into the ponytail so the wrap stays hidden.

If the felt sits a little high, gently slide it down to create a relaxed, undone finish.

5. For the final touch, lightly tease the ponytail to add fullness and texture.

This quick felt wrap ponytail is a simple, stylish alternative to a rubber band. With just a small felt strip and two bobby pins, you can create a secure, low ponytail with a loose, modern finish.

Ingredients

  • small sheet of felt at least 1/8 inch thick, if possible
  • scissors
  • 2 bobby pins
  • texturizing spray
  • comb

Instructions

  • Starting with the felt accessory: cut a long strip roughly 1/2 inch wide and 7 inches long. Exact size is flexible. Set two bobby pins aside.
  • Prep hair: begin with air-dried or straight hair and apply a texturizing product for grip and volume.
  • Lightly tease hair all over, avoiding the pieces nearest your face.
  • Position the felt under the spot where the ponytail will sit, wrap it around your hair twice, and secure it underneath with two bobby pins pushed through the underside of the felt into the ponytail. If the wrap feels too high, gently slide it down to create a more undone look.
  • Finish by lightly teasing the ponytail to boost fullness and texture.
