DIY Car-Themed Valentine Crafts for Kids: Vroom Vroom Ideas

This year we made car Valentines — they also work great as party favors for kids’ birthday parties!

If your child loves cars, this is an easy last-minute idea for classroom Valentines or party favors. It’s perfect for children roughly 4–8 years old.

This project isn’t reinventing the wheel, but it’s affordable — under $2 per Valentine or favor — so I wanted to share how we put ours together. Read on to see the simple steps and some helpful tips.

Materials

  • Small toy cars, such as Hot Wheels or Matchbox
  • Small canvas bags
  • Printer and printer paper

My son Hayes came with me to pick out the cars. In-store Target had good prices on single Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars (around $1.20 each) and multipacks (a 5-pack for about $5.99). There are about 20 kids in his class, so we chose that many cars. Picking them out together was a fun activity — Hayes even picked specific cars he thought certain classmates would like.

To cut costs further and reduce waste, check thrift stores for bulk bags of toy cars. I once saw a large bag of Hot Wheels for $7 with at least 20 cars — after a quick wash they would have been perfect for this project.

I purchased an affordable font for the printables that I’ll reuse later, but you can easily use a free font from Canva or another design tool.

How to Assemble Car Valentines / Party Favors

The process is straightforward: I designed a printable card in Photoshop, resized it for the small format, printed and cut the cards, and then placed one inside each canvas bag along with a toy car. Hayes signed the bottom of each card and we wrote each classmate’s name on the outside of the bags to keep things organized.

Make It More Fun

An easy way to add a playful detail is to stamp a road-like line on the bags or cards. We use a rolling stamp originally meant for creating dashed handwriting lines for kids — to me it looks just like a road. It’s fun for making racetracks at home and also looks cute as decoration on party bags or cards.

Car Valentine Phrases to Try

Here are some short, kid-friendly car phrases you can print on your cards. Most of these also work well for birthday party favors:

  1. You are “wheelie” cool.
  2. You are just my speed.
  3. I never “tire” of you, Valentine.
  4. I’m “wheelie” glad we’re friends.
  5. You make my heart race.
  6. I like how you roll.
  7. Racing by to say Happy Valentine’s Day.
