DIY Giant 3+ Ft Wreath for Under $10: Step-by-Step Guide

I couldn’t wait another day—I had to share this giant wreath project right away. I built a seriously large DIY wreath for the studio yesterday. I hadn’t planned to write a tutorial, but when it was finished I loved it so much I couldn’t resist sharing. It’s over three feet tall and the basic frame costs less than $10 (flowers not included), so this felt like something worth passing along.

What I love about this design is how flexible it is: keep it asymmetrical or cover the entire frame with greenery, add fresh flowers or leave it minimal, and adjust the size or shape to suit your space. Want to make one yourself? Follow the step-by-step instructions below.

This year’s giant wreath is loosely inspired by last year’s popular asymmetrical wreath DIY, which remains one of my most-viewed holiday projects. This triangular version might be my new favorite, though—its scale makes a fun statement without much cost.

How to make a giant DIY wreath on a budget

Materials

  • Tree trimmings — gather 8–10 large pieces with lots of offshoots (more if you want a fuller look)
  • Two pieces of 3/4″ × 1.5″ × 6′ pine board (I used two 6′ boards at about $5.56 each). Alternatively, use one 6′ board and a scrap piece about 25–30″ long for the base, like I did.
  • Four long wood screws (1.5–2″ length works well)
  • Floral wire for attaching greenery

For reference, my finished wreath measured about 3.5 feet tall with some greenery extending upward, and just under 3 feet wide.

Where to find free tree trimmings

If you don’t want to buy greenery, ask local tree lots for trimmings. Each year I stop by tree lots and ask if I can take the cuttings they remove when cleaning up tree trunks—Home Depot and Lowe’s often give them away for free. You can end up with a big pile of fresh branches to use for wreaths, garlands, and other holiday décor.

Instructions

Quick note: the frame construction isn’t meant to be pretty—it’s fast, sturdy, and hidden once the greenery is attached. No one will see the rough parts when the wreath is finished.

  1. Measure and cut the wood to the size you want. I cut my 1×3×6 board in half to create two 3-foot sides and used a scrap board cut to about 24 inches for the base of the triangle.
  2. Position the two long pieces on their sides (so you get extra depth) and place the bottom scrap piece across the top where the base will be. Clamp everything to your work surface so the pieces stay put while screwing them together.
  3. Drill pilot holes first, then drive the screws in. I used one screw at each bottom corner and two near the top—one from each side—starting with the bottom screws to set the frame before securing the top.
  4. Once the frame is assembled, attach greenery. Bundle several large trimmings together and wire each bundle around the frame, twisting the wire tightly to secure. Work from one corner and overlap bundles slightly as you go so each layer covers the stems beneath it. You can cover just two sides for an asymmetrical look or cover all three sides for fullness.
  5. Continue wiring in bundles until you’ve achieved the desired coverage. If you’d like, tuck in fresh flowers before hanging by wiring small water vials to hold stems for a floral version.

Have leftover trimmings after completing the wreath? Use extras to decorate your mantel, make a matching garland, or create smaller companion wreaths.

Would a large wreath like this suit your space? Do you prefer a minimal evergreen look or a version loaded with flowers and color? Either way, this triangular giant wreath is a bold, budget-friendly statement piece that’s customizable to your style and home.
