A clever ice cream cone holder is a perfect late-summer DIY to try during the final warm weeks of the year.
Although Labor Day may have come and gone, summer isn’t quite finished. It’s still hot in many places, and anything that involves ice cream feels just right for this stretch of warm weather.
Here’s an easy project for a DIY ice cream cone holder that’s ideal for the last hot days before fall. Use a wood serving tray or a scrap board and in just a few minutes you’ll have an attractive, useful way to serve cones to guests or family.
You might have seen this cone holder on display at an end-of-summer gathering. It was a last-minute solution when I realized we needed a tray for cones, and I made it in under ten minutes the same day.
If you’re comfortable using a drill, this will be a quick and simple build.

Materials and Tools Needed
- scrap wood, wood serving tray, or cutting board
- two table clamps
- drill
- 1/2 inch spade bit (or larger, depending on how deep you want cones to sit)
- sandpaper
How to Make a DIY Wood Ice Cream Cone Holder
1. Decide how many cones you want the holder to accommodate and how far apart to space the holes. Secure the board with clamps so it doesn’t move while you drill.
2. Using the spade bit, carefully drill each hole to the desired depth. Smooth the inside of each hole with sandpaper if needed, wipe away any dust, and the board is ready. That’s all there is to it—simple and fast.
