DIY No-Sew Kids’ Purse from Old Jeans

Generally speaking, if it’s a no-sew project, I’m in! This one is perfect for kids.

This kids’ purse idea is genuinely simple and ideal for carrying small toys, craft supplies, or whatever children like to tote around. The best part: it’s a no-sew project that kids can complete almost entirely on their own. Younger children may need a little adult supervision for the cutting step, but older kids can manage the whole process start to finish.

All you need is an old pair of pants or shorts with pockets—denim works great, but any sturdy fabric with pockets will do. You can also adapt this pouch into a fanny pack by using a longer strap.

Materials

  • Old pair of pants or shorts with pockets (denim or other fabric)
  • Scrap fabric, yarn, cord, or ribbon for the handle
  • Scissors (use child-friendly scissors for kids)
  • (Optional) Paint, fabric markers, gems, or other decorations

You can use a small front watch pocket for a tiny pouch, or a back pocket for a larger purse. Choose the pocket size that fits the purpose—small coin purse, mini-toy pouch, or something in between.

How to Make a Kids No-Sew Purse

1. Remove the pocket. Lay the pants or shorts flat and carefully cut one pocket out, cutting as close to the seam as possible without cutting into the pocket itself. If you choose a front watch pocket, you’ll have a tiny pouch; back pockets become a roomier purse.

2. Tidy the edges. Trim any excess fabric close to the pocket seam so the pouch has neat edges. If you want a flap that folds over the opening, keep a bit of fabric above the pocket; if not, trim flush with the top edge.

3. Add a handle and decorate. Create a strap from scrap fabric, yarn, cord, or ribbon. There are two easy no-sew ways to attach it:

  • Punch or cut a small hole at each top corner of the pocket, thread the strap through, and knot it on the inside so it stays secure.
  • Use leftover fabric strips from the pants and tie or knot them into a strap. If you have basic sewing skills and want a stronger handle, tack the ends with a few needle-and-thread stitches, but it’s not required.

Once the handle is attached, personalize the pouch with fabric markers, paint, stick-on gems, patches, or other embellishments. Kids enjoy drawing doodles, writing their names, or gluing small decorations onto the pouch.

For a playful accent, try making small felt-ball “cherries” or other tiny charms and attach them to the strap or flap. Simple craft wire can be used to create tiny stems for felt balls if you already have wire on hand, but that step is purely decorative.

Turn It Into a Fanny Pack

If you prefer a hands-free option, convert the pouch into a fanny pack by using a longer strap or cord that can wrap around the child’s waist. Thread the cord through holes on each side of the pouch and knot the ends securely, or tie the strap with a small buckle or clasp if you have one. Adjust the length so the pouch sits comfortably at the front or side.

This quick project is a great way to reuse old clothing and gives kids a sense of pride in making their own accessory. It’s fast, frugal, and fun—most pouches can be completed in about 15 minutes once the materials are ready. The finished pouch has the casual, lived-in look of upcycled denim and is durable enough for everyday pretend play and light use.

Try different fabrics, trims, and decorations to create a whole collection of pouches: bright cotton pockets for summer, corduroy for a cozy look, or patterned fabric for something bold. Because the project requires no sewing, it’s an excellent introduction to crafting for kids and a satisfying way to turn worn-out clothes into something both practical and playful.

Quick Tips

  • Use child-safe scissors and supervise cutting for younger kids.
  • Choose pockets with sturdy seams for longer-lasting pouches.
  • If you want a closure, add a small Velcro dot under the flap or a snap if you have one and can attach it safely.
  • Personalize with patches, fabric paint, or iron-on letters for a unique result.

This no-sew pocket pouch is a simple, eco-friendly craft that repurposes old clothing and encourages creativity. It’s an ideal rainy-day activity, party craft, or quick gift that kids will be proud to make and wear.
