A thoughtful color palette and something sweet are all you really need to make a party feel special.
Below I’ve put together a practical list of must-have supplies to use as a reference when planning everything from spontaneous get-togethers to fully organized celebrations. With Easter coming up, I’ve included a few of my favorite pastel-themed items to show how a simple set of supplies can turn a table into a seasonal scene—or be adapted to any theme you prefer.
Here are the essentials I keep on hand for entertaining.
My Must-Have Party Supplies for Entertaining
1. Basics: plates, cups, napkins, and cutlery
Practical tableware doesn’t have to be boring. Disposable paper plates, cups, and napkins are lifesavers for last-minute parties because they simplify cleanup. There are lots of stylish paper party options now, so you can get the look you want without extra dishwashing.
If you prefer reusable tableware, plain white plates and simple glassware always look clean and polished. When I have time I use real dishes (I keep a set from Crate & Barrel in the studio), but disposable pieces are great when you don’t want to deal with dishes afterwards.
2. Simple ways to dress up a store-bought cake
Buying a pre-made cake from the grocery store is an easy, budget-friendly option—then you can personalize it with a few quick touches. For an Easter look, I crushed pastel candy and scattered it over the frosting like confetti for an instant seasonal upgrade.
Other quick ideas: fresh berries, edible flowers, a drizzle of ganache, sprinkles, or a simple piped border to hide the factory finish. These small additions make a store cake feel custom and festive.
3. Ribbon
Ribbon is surprisingly versatile. I keep several colors and textures (velvet is a favorite) to tie utensils, add a pop to napkins, or mark glassware so guests can keep track of drinks. A roll of ribbon takes up little space but adds a big visual impact.
4. Place cards or guest notes
Place cards are an optional extra, but they add a thoughtful, personal touch. A DIY card or a small note tucked at each seat feels welcoming and helps guests know where to sit. You can leave the name blank until guests arrive if you’re unsure of the final headcount.
5. Balloons
Balloons remain a fast, inexpensive way to create a celebratory mood. A handful of inflated balloons instantly signals a party and they’re easy to store uninflated. Choose colors or shapes that match your theme for maximum effect.
6. Confetti
Confetti is another compact item that makes a big statement. You can buy premade confetti in many colors and shapes, or make your own—biodegradable options and real-petal confetti are eco-friendly alternatives. Scatter sparingly for a refined look, or use it liberally for a festive scene.
7. Candles
Candles set the mood—whether for a birthday cake or for table ambiance at an evening gathering. Beeswax or colored taper candles in varied heights create a warm, elegant atmosphere.
8. Vases and flowers
A few matching vases with grocery-store flowers will instantly lift a table. Keep a couple of simple vases in different sizes on hand so you can quickly arrange blooms into small centerpieces. DIY vases work well too if you enjoy crafting.
