Faux Fur Throw Pillow in 20 Minutes: Quick Decorative DIY

Adding texture to your bedroom for the fall and winter months is a simple way to refresh your space. If you’ve been curious about faux fur projects, here’s an easy DIY faux fur pillow you can make quickly—under 20 minutes. I made this using an inexpensive faux fur throw from Target and just two lines of stitching. Below are clear, step-by-step instructions so you can recreate the look.

How to make a faux fur pillow in under 20 minutes

Materials

  • Faux fur throw
  • Pillow insert in your desired size (I used a 15 x 15 inch insert)
  • Needle and thread
  • Seamstress tape measure (useful for hand stitching and measuring)
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine

How to make the pillow

The throw I used has a backing fabric on the underside. That construction makes the project faster because two edges are already joined—use a corner of the blanket so you’ll only need to sew along the remaining edges.

1. Measure your pillow insert (mine is 15 x 15 inches). Add 1/2 to 3/4 inch seam allowance to each side and mark the dimensions starting from a corner of the throw.

2. Cut the throw following those marks. If you cut from a corner, two sides will already be sewn from the original throw and two sides will be newly cut.

3. Turn the cut piece inside out so the fur faces inward. Using a straight stitch on the sewing machine, sew one full side closed. On the opposite side, sew most of the edge but leave a 6–8 inch opening to insert the pillow.

4. Flip the pillowcase right side out and insert the pillow. Push out the corners so the insert fills the shape—use a long dowel or similar tool if your fingers can’t reach the corners.

5. Close the opening by hand using a blind ladder stitch for an invisible finish.

This project works well with most throw blankets that have a backing layer. If you have a similar blanket, try this quick sew to add a soft, textured accent to your bed or sofa. What do you think of textured decorative pillows—would you add one to your bedroom?
