Embroidered jean shorts for the win!

Following the theme of July Fourth DIY projects, here’s a quick and versatile idea that works well for the holiday—and any other time of year. This simple embroidery upgrade transforms a favorite pair of jean shorts into a playful, handmade piece with very little time or expense.
These embroidered firework-style jean shorts add a subtle, celebratory accent without overwhelming the garment. The design also adapts easily to full-length jeans, jackets, sweaters, or t-shirts. With just a needle and thread you can create a custom look that feels polished and personal.
How to Make Embroidered Jean Shorts
Materials are minimal: a pair of jean shorts (or any denim item), an embroidery needle, and embroidery floss or thread. I used embroidery floss because it’s thicker and the stitches show up nicely, but regular thread will work if you prefer a more understated look.
Thread your needle with a single or double strand of embroidery floss. Double the floss for a bolder, more visible stitch. Tie a double or triple knot at the end so it won’t pull through the fabric, then start from the inside of the shorts so the knot sits on the wrong side.
The motif is essentially a simple asterisk or starburst. Bring the needle up through the fabric at the center point, pull the thread through, then insert the needle back into the fabric a short distance away so the line radiates outward. Come up again at the center or just beside it and stitch the next radiating line. Repeat with several evenly spaced lines to form a star or firework shape. Vary the length, spacing, and number of lines to create different looks—some stars can be larger, some smaller, clustered or spaced apart for a scattered-firework effect.
When you’re finished with a motif, take the needle to the inside of the shorts, tie a secure knot (double or triple), trim any excess thread, and smooth the fabric. Repeat the process to add more stars across pockets, hems, or along a seam until you’re happy with the placement. Because the stitches are simple straight lines, this project is fast and beginner-friendly.
Tips and Variations
- Use contrasting colors for a bolder statement, or tone-on-tone floss for a subtle, textured look.
- Mix stitches—combine the straight-line starburst with small French knots at the center to add dimension.
- Try metallic or variegated floss for a festive sheen, especially for holiday wear.
- If you’re nervous about stitching directly on a favorite item, practice on an old pair of jeans or a scrap of denim first.
- Place motifs thoughtfully: along pocket edges, near the hem, or clustered on one side for visual balance.

Summary: A small, low-cost update that gives a pair of jean shorts a handmade, festive touch. These firework-inspired stitches are quick, adaptable, and a great way to personalize denim for the Fourth of July or any warm-weather occasion.
Equipment
- Embroidery needle
- Scissors
Materials
- Embroidery floss or thread
Instructions
- Gather a pair of jean shorts and an embroidery needle and floss. Embroidery floss shows up more clearly because it’s thicker.
- Thread one or two strands of floss through the needle. Double the floss for a thicker stitch. Tie a double or triple knot at the end, then start from the inside of the shorts so the knot stays hidden.
- Create a simple asterisk/starburst pattern by stitching straight lines radiating from a center point. Push the needle back through the fabric after each line and come up again at the center for the next line. Repeat until you have the desired number of rays.
- When a motif is complete, bring the thread to the inside, secure with a double or triple knot, trim excess thread, and repeat wherever you want additional stars.
