Interior Obsessions: 5 Stylish DIY Home Projects I Spotted

Interior Obsessions // I Spy 5 Things I Can DIY

I decided to mix two of my passions this week — DIY projects and thoughtful interiors — and hunt through my design archives for clever decor ideas you can make yourself. The result is a short list of simple, stylish items that are very DIY-friendly and elevate a room without a lot of fuss.

Here are five projects that caught my eye:

1. Potted Pendant Light: I spotted a quirky hanging pot pendant in a Melbourne home featured on The Design Files and loved the playful effect. This is a straightforward DIY: a light kit and a terracotta pot are the essentials. Remodelista offers a step‑by‑step guide, but even without detailed instructions the idea is simple — drill a hole in the pot, thread the cord and secure the socket. It makes an unexpected statement and brings a warm, handcrafted feel to a kitchen or dining nook.

2. Leather Storage Straps: Minimal and sculptural, leather wall straps double as storage and decorative hooks. The concept used by Mathilda Clahr is elegant in its simplicity: a long leather strip anchored with a screw or nail becomes a hanging loop for magazines, towels or light objects. You can make them from a single strip of leather and basic hardware, or choose ready‑made straps if you want a perfect finish. Either way, they add texture and functional detail to a hallway or bathroom.

3. Unexpected Gallery Wall: A gallery wall in a surprising spot — like a bathroom — livens the space and is an easy DIY to pull off. I loved the bathroom cluster spotted via Lovely Indeed: a mix of framed prints, small paintings and postcards hung together creates personality. You don’t need matching frames; the charm is in the variety. Lay out the arrangement on the floor first, then transfer it to the wall, and follow a simple hanging tutorial if you want precise spacing. It’s a low‑cost, high‑impact update.

4. Blanket Ladder: Blanket ladders are versatile and visually appealing, and this one used as a shoe and accessory rack caught my attention for its clever multifunctional use. If you prefer a cleaner, mid‑century look there are tutorials that show how to build a lean‑back ladder with tapered legs and evenly spaced rungs. A DIY ladder is a quick woodworking project and provides neat, vertical storage for throws, scarves or even lightweight baskets.

5. Copper Clothing Rack: A hanging copper clothing rack is a gorgeous way to store garments without sacrificing floor space. I first saw Madelynn Hackwith Furlong’s design featured on SFgirlbybay and later discovered a DIY tutorial for the same idea. It’s a clever suspended solution — visually light but sturdy — and copper adds an elegant, warm metallic accent that works in bedrooms, dressing areas or open closets.

Which of these would you try at home?
