I had this oversized wood block garland project on my to-do list since last Christmas. With the holidays approaching again, I finally finished it and wanted to share the step-by-step process so you can make one in time for the season—or anytime you want a bold, handmade accent for your home.
This garland works great as a Christmas tree decoration, but it’s versatile enough for year-round use. The oversized wooden beads and colorful painted faces give a simple room arrangement an instant update.

How to make an oversized wood block garland:
Materials
- One wooden dowel 2–3 inches in diameter, cut into 2–4 inch cylinder blocks (many hardware stores will cut these for you)
- Wood blocks in assorted sizes (from about 1 inch up to 3 inches)
- Acrylic paint in your chosen colors
- Paint brushes
- String or cord long enough for your desired garland length
- A short piece of stiff wire to help feed the string through the drilled holes
- Drill and a 1/4 inch spade or twist bit
- Table vise or clamp to hold each block while drilling
Step-by-step instructions
1. Paint the wood blocks. Choose a palette that fits your décor—holiday colors, pastels, or neutrals all work well. Paint each face of square blocks different colors if you like, and leave some faces raw for variety. Allow the paint to dry completely before handling.

2. Secure each block in a table vise or clamp and drill a hole straight through the center. Drill with the grain to reduce the risk of splitting—this helps maintain a clean hole and sturdy bead.

3. Attach a short length of stiff wire to the end of your string—taping it firmly in place—so it can easily pass through each drilled hole. Thread the blocks onto the string, arranging them in the order and spacing you prefer.

4. Once all blocks are threaded, tie a secure double or triple knot at each end of the string to keep the blocks in place. Trim any excess cord and tuck or secure the knots so they don’t show if you prefer a clean finish.

Alternative uses and tips
If you have leftover painted blocks, you can turn them into ornaments by screwing in small eyelet hooks and threading thin cord through them. These make charming, handmade tree decorations and are a great way to use scraps if you decide not to make a garland.
